He was 79? Wow, that one snuck up on me. A great, great trombonist. Playing one of my favorites by him right now. RIP

Just saw that one last night. Wild ending! gregmo -
It is occasionally a bit confusing as to exactly who is writing which notes. As for Loren, maybe he was just a little too close to this one? That said, I found most of the notes to be pretty good (especially Morganstern) and the music to be wonderful. And medjuck is right--some very fine Pres clarinet here! gregmo

Japanese cd reissues seldom include bonus/alternate tracks. gregmo

The Savory set finally arrived, and I opened it to find that I have booklet number "2." There's proof positive that Mosaic sets really are random. I'd have thought that Cuscuna or Wenzel would have gotten the first numbered booklets, but I guess not! Lacking any of the self-control some of you exercised, I went straight to the first Basie disc (V), because the Old Testament Band has always been my favorite big band, period. The magnificent exuberance of that band comes through loud and clear, and I came as close as I ever have to one my earliest and most exquisite listening experiences: the first time I put the old Decca 2-record "Best of Count Basie" disc on my old "portable" stereo turntable nearly 50 years ago. Jimmy Rushing in full shout, Lester Young unloosed, Herschel Evans before early death robbed us of him. I am *really* going to enjoy this set!!! gregmo

I'm with Larry on this one. He always struck me as a particularly melancholy man. I did love his shows on Vietnam, but that profound sadness was always either just below the surface or ON the surface. gregmo

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
gmonahan replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So, I got to thinking, what Mosaic have I not played practically since I got it? This one. It's actually pretty good: -

Johnny Hodges/Wild Bill Davis Project 4 Volumes/5 CDs
gmonahan replied to greggery peccary's topic in Re-issues
The fact that Lonehill put this out probably explains why Mosaic is so hesitant to do a Hodges 60s Verve box. Sigh. gregmo -
No, no, no--it was in the Mosaic Buddy Bolden set. You guys need to do some memory exercises! gregmo

Didn't Hammond produce all of Rushing's output for the label? It was reissued on 2 cds. gregmo

This one looks like fun. I assume it's pre-Perry Raymond Burr? Is he the bad guy?! gregmo -
I wondered what had happened to you, Jeff. Haven't seen any of those way cool 78 posts in a while! gregmo

I'll second what Jim said. I've always thought the records Satch made with the Dukes were his last really good records, especially as far as his trumpet playing went. They're well worth hearing. gregmo

Thanks Ubu. I'm away from my collection right now, or I'd check on the Alhambra material. Sure wish they'd continue with that series! gregmo

Swing Bands: Who should I listen to next?
gmonahan replied to Captain Howdy's topic in Recommendations
I had been listening to the bands for a while (this was many years ago) when I discovered Fletcher Henderson's mid-30s band that recorded for Decca. It swung like crazy and mostly recorded instrumentals. Try this one: -

Jim, You never tell us whether you actually like all these admittedly coolly titled B movies you watch! Are there any you'd particularly recommend, or are you only posting posters from ones you *would* recommend?! gregmo -
It's funny that you should write that. I remember writing Mosaic way back in the early days--damn near pre-internet--to ask them how come some sets seemed to disappear so fast. They actually printed that letter in one of their flyers (when they used to DO flyers!), and that's when they explained that sets could disappear in TWO ways, one, if the run was exhausted, and two, if the license ran out for whatever reason. I don't think they differentiate about the cause, even if it's a disaster at the pressing plant (where the masters were lost, right?). Once a set is gone, for whatever reason, I very seriously doubt they'll bring it back. But yes, it would be nice if they did! gregmo
-
It's possible, I guess, and some of us here would certainly like to see it (!), but one of Mosaic's earliest and most solemn pledges was that "once these sets are gone, they're gone for good" and "they'll never come back." Of course, like a good politician, they could always change their collective minds, though I'd be surprised if they did. gregmo

I've always liked Basie's account of the first time he met Tatum. This article in the NY Times summarizes it, though it gets the city wrong (it was Toledo, not Cleveland), but it's fun: Basie's story, including the time he met Tatum gregmo
