  1. There are also the six volumes of "The Indispensable Benny Goodman" on RCA's European Black and White series, and that label's Complete Small Groups set. gregmo
  2. Yes, that's what I heard about the Goodmans from Loren Schoenberg when I talked to him a few years ago. He said the Estate wanted way too much money. gregmo
  3. Groovemaker is one of my favorite Basie albums. Only issue with this idea is that most of them have been issued on cd (even Basie's Beat, though only in Japan on a limited release), but pulling them together in a set would be very nice! gregmo
  4. Most of BG's Victors have been reissued on cd before. When that's the case, Mosaic tends to be a lot more hesitant, but I guess it's always possible--maybe a Savory set of Goodmans, assuming they could ever get the Estate to clear it. I think this whole business of trying to be sure they had enough preorders to do the Herman set was an improvisation, and my guess is they didn't know when they started it that 700 would be the magic number. I agree with those who argue that if they're going to do this in the future, they need to give us a number from the gitgo. I have the distinct sense, though, that this has been a learning process for them! gregmo
  5. I think "Blue Horizon" is the best jazz clarinet EVER! I've listened to it countless times, and it still sends tingles up and down my spine when I hear it. gregmo
  6. Had quite the discussion with some friends about the ending of that one. I sort of liked it. They did not! I agree about Hawke, though. "Juliet, Naked" looks interesting (er...as a movie, that is!) gregmo
  7. Wouldn't mind hearing--and having--this one:
  8. Hard to break too! I know Red Nichols recorded for Edison, but I'm not aware of most of the bands Jeff lists in his post. I'm surprised you can adjust your turntable to play Edisons!! gregmo
  9. True that! gregmo
  10. Yes, I like Bechet's work with Noble Sissle from the mid-30s. I finally got it on cd by getting a 4-cd JSP set remastered by Ted Kendall. That Don Byas record looks particularly obscure! I don't think I'm familiar with "Jamboree" Records. Has that one been issued on cd? gregmo
  11. Yes, that was an odd one--the first time I've ever pre-ordered a set before its release and received a notice that it was on backorder! I assume it's just the way they're doing the accounting, but it was pretty goofy! gregmo
  12. I believe that's Preston Tucker, Jim. Forrest Tucker was the actor on F-Troop! gregmo
  13. Aretha was also a class act. I remember her showing up at the March on Cancer in 1998 to offer support and a song or two. What a great, great artist she was. A foundational voice in American--world--music. gregmo
  14. You guys laugh, but Elon Musk is actually working on a way to put a chip into the brain to access the Cloud, and I recently read an article about people who have chips inserted into their hands so they can enter their apartments without keys. Me, I'll stick with keys, thanks very much. And cds. gregmo
  15. I found it used at the Paris Jazz Corner on one of my trips there. Always loved that store!! gregmo
  16. Damn, you're right. I stand corrected!! Guess I'll have to hang on to that Decca GRP cd after all! gregmo
  17. The discography for this set shows all the Deccas from the late 30s on. Responding to other questions, there are definitely reissue holes. The Japanese did reissue the fairly rare "New Swingin' Herman Herd" recorded in 1960 for Crown, but that one is not exactly popping off the shelves, and others have mentioned some Columbia stuff left out of various boxes. Mosaic issued a cd single of "Woody's Winners" from the mid-60s that also included some of "East-West," but one has to scramble to find some of Woody's mid-60s Columbias on cd. And French CBS did issue the post-war Ellington Columbias on 5 cds as "The Complete Duke Ellington, 1947-52." That set included all the singles as well as the first Ellington LPs for the label. gregmo
  18. Well, I'm in. I've always loved Woody. Verve did issue a number of the MGM things in its 2-cd "Woody Herman at Carnegie Hall" set, but it will be nice to have all the Deccas and the Mars stuff. Back in my younger days, I loved "The Turning Point" on Decca's old Jazz Heritage series (still have it), but the sound was so awful, I couldn't listen to it anymore. Almost *any* version will sound better! gregmo
  19. That would make it easier for Roscoe.... Nice house, Chuck. Hope you get a good price for it! gregmo
  20. I.e., you're a lot like the rest of us on this board (well, the "insane" part, anyway!). Thanks for the detailed reply! gregmo
  21. Forgive me for being a bit lazy in not looking through this (great!) thread to find out, but I'm wondering what turntable/cartridge/stylus you use to play your 78s. Some of these--like this one!--are so valuable, I'd almost be scared to play them at all! gregmo
  22. Nice to see you back Jeff!! gregmo
  23. Jazz Moose years ago when we lived in the same small town. gregmo
  24. Damn, and I had really been successful getting THAT image from years ago out of my head.... gregmo
  25. I'll vote for Hank. Maybe the Critics history group will bring Don Byas in. If not, Byas next year! gregmo
