  1. An even more important question is why all the video Ipods in the article show SNL skits. Not that I'm complaining. Guy
  2. These are all very nice. Guy
  3. Wow, that's an incredible deal. Guy
  4. Probably for the record company. Guy
  5. I just started to watch this show. Even funnier than I expected! Guy
  6. I'm guessing '69 rather than '68 -- there's only one known live recording from '68, and it's supposedly of very poor quality. Guy
  7. It's a real pity that the interview isn't in English, because I thought it was even more interesting than Tsahar's! Thanks, Barak. I thought it was really interesting that he was concerned about Jews taking offense at the playing of the shofar. Guy
  8. I picked this up a while back but only started listening to it today. It's not on the same level as the great Atlantics, but anyone who likes Ornette should definitely hear it. The rhythm section does a pretty good job even if they're not Charlie and Billy. Great playing by Ornette and Don, as well as some of Mr. Coleman's finest compositions. Ignore the one-star review on amazon. Ornette Coleman - Tomorrow Is The Question I guess I should look out for Somethin' Else too. Guy
  9. Jeez, I am so behind on RVGs. Hutch and Jackie are easily at the top of the want-list, but there are at least 4 or 5 other ones that I will have to pick up at some point. Guy
  10. I got half my order today which was pretty quick. I'm not sure what's happening with the rest of it, but for 26.47GBP for 5 BS/SN titles I ain't complaining. Guy
  11. Someone on the Keith Jarrett list posted the following about something Keith said at his recent solo concert in LA: Guy
  12. Interesting point. It makes for quite a contrast with the lengthy winding melody of "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love". (And also some of the Bill Evans tunes on that tribute album.) Guy ps "Mumbo Jumbo" is my favorite Motian tune. I have some live recordings of this group from the Vanguard over the last few years and it always gets a storming performance. Frisell is usually wilder on those versions.
  13. Alright, I'm back. This is one of my favorite albums by the trio (up there with Trioism and I Have the Room Above Her), and I like it better than their other album from these sessions (recently reissued on Winter & Winter). It offers a pretty good representation of what their live sets at the Vanguard sound like. Bill Frisell is mostly effects-free on the album. I agree about the sucky packaging. Track by track: 1. A great version of Misterioso. Bill's countryfied solo is just great, as is Joe's playing. This one wasn't on the Monk tribute album, oddly enough, though they did cover it on the album by the same name. 2. A beautiful version of the Mingus classic. A song that should be covered more often. The only track on this album that the trio had never recorded. 3. "Mumbo Jumbo" is maybe my favorite track on the album. The Lovano-Motian duet in the second half of the track is intense. Whew! 4. "Once Around the Park" -- wonderful intro by Bill. The whole "Motian can't swing" line is obviously bullshit, but it's true that many of his compositions don't. This one does very nicely. 5. "Good Morning Heartache" -- beautiful. I especially Joe's playing on the melody's return. 6. "Epistrophy" -- not as earthshaking as "Misterioso", but nice and swinging. 7. "Play" -- ends the set with a weird little ballad. More extended than the version on Trioism.
  14. A very fun trip! I won't bore you with all the details, but just want to recommend the trip to Hana. True, a lot of time in the car (my round trip, which went several miles beyond Hana to the pools of the Oheo Gulch took 9 hrs!), but also very cool sights. Vistas of beautiful bays, black sand beaches, great waterfalls. The Molokini snorkeling was incredible. Besides the reef itself, I saw some giant sea turtles. Also, off the boat we caught a family of humpback whales only a 100 ft or so away. Kauai was interesting (never seen so many wild chickens in my life!) but the weather was shit. I went up to the Waimea Canyon and all I saw was a wall of fog. Guy
  15. Thinking about it in that context, I can see/hear why you thought that. God, I hope that's not the case.... What a depressing thought. Get better Andrew! Guy

  17. Only vaguely. I haven't been bothering to follow the games via gamecast or audio. Anyway, I guess at this point we should root for them to get as many ping pong balls as possible. Bruce -- the Ws have been rebuilding for over a decade. This was supposed to be their season. I'm not getting my hopes up. Guy
  18. The Daily Show had a very funny segment on this. Guy
  19. And how about the eagerness to impose martial law from Vice President Chen... err Gardner. Guy
  20. My favorite part of Monday's episodes was the quintessential Jack Bauer moment when he shot that woman in the leg. Guy
  21. How does it compare (quality-wise) to Dusk (which I really liked)? I will probably pick this up when it gets on yourmusic. Guy
  22. Paul Motian - Sound of Love (click to buy) I probably won't be able to post for the next week, so feel free to carry on with a discussion until I come back (after the current AOTW ends, of course). Paul Motian (d) Joe Lovano (ts) Bill Frisell (eg) 1. Misterioso 2. Duke Ellington's Sound of Love 3. Mumbo Jumbo 4. Once Around the Park 5. Good Morning Heartache 6. Epistrophy 7. Play
  23. I'm wondering how Jack will save the world from inside a sealed room... Guy
