  1. Nobody's said "this thread" yet... Guy
  2. Hmmm... it's snowing tomorrow making driving hazardous so I might not come down to NYC. The only alternative is the weekend, but I hate paying exorbitant prices for just one set... I might have to pass on this. Guy

As far as BS/SN, I really like Jon Jang's Two Flowers on a Stem. Post-to-free-bop with Chinese folk-music themeses. With David Murray, James Newton, Billy Hart, Santi Debriano and one other musician who plays erhu. Newton is stupendous on this, and there's a really nice version of "Meditations on Integration". Guy
  4. This must have happened after the final time I saw them (fall 2000), because that was an actual band. Guy
  5. The last album I picked up was Waterfall Cities and it was OK. OTOH I liked Curious Corn quite a bit. I saw them live two or three times in the late 90s and early 00s. They're OK as a live band -- too much like the studio albums. Aren't they pretty much an Ed solo project at this point? I think the group was best when Merv and Joie were members. Haven't heard Pongmaster's Ball at all, and haven't listened to Spice Doubt for a while. I wonder how that goop in the album sleeve is holding up, I should go check. Guy
  6. Peacemeal is one of Eddie Gomez/Jack DeJohnette's best recordings together. Man they are a fucking powerhouse together! A big Big second for Peacemeal. This may be a stupid question, but how many recordings did they make together? There's a Bill Evans album, right? What else? Guy
  7. A bunch of BS & SN albums: Muhal Richard Abrams, Blu Blu Blu Old & New Dreams, s/t David Murray, Ming David Murray, Murray's Steps David Murray, Body & Soul Bley/Haden/Motian, Memoirs Bley/Gilmore/Peacock/Motian, Turning Point Allen/Haden/Motian, Etudes Paul Motian trio, One Time Out Steve Lacy/Mal Waldron, Communique
  8. I'm in the UK and can recommend The Woods. They are not the fastest to fulfill orders but they are reliable. Shipping is included in the UK prices so I'd guess that their overseas shipping is reasonable. They never charge your card until the order is shipped. Drop them an email. Well, I ordered. They told me their US shipping is 1.50GBP for a 1 CD order, less (so this is presumably per CD) for larger orders. Guy
  9. D.D. -- have you heard any of the European dates from the fall of 1969? They're even more free (in the jazz sense) than the Fillmore dates, though with less electronic mayhem. Guy
  10. I used to be a lot more into these guys in college, but still enjoy them quite a bit. Some of my favorite albums by Ed, Merv, Joie, Roly and their friends:
  11. Hmmm... what are the shipping costs to the US? Guy
  12. And Teo Macero's ! There's an interesting discussion about Teo's contributions in the book Miles Beyond. Guy
  13. I like On the Corner quite a bit (more than any post-Bitches Brew studio album) even if it isn't one of my favorites. The concept would mature once Cosey and Lucas came in. McLaughlin has a great solo in there, but the other soloists leave something to be desired (also a problem with the In Concert album, IMHO). In the end this kind of music stands or falls on the strength of the rhythm section, and here it's brilliant. The first medley is stronger than the second medley. One of Miles's most visionary albums. Guy
  14. Not sure I'd call this one underrated -- it's generally considered one of McCoy's best recordings. Guy
  15. Lee Konitz: Duets & Peacemeal (both Milestone/OJC, I believe)
  16. happy birthday! Guy
  17. And I wish that whatever it was that killed the dinosaurs would do the same to my neighbor with the very loud stereo and fondness for death metal...
  18. I wish global warming would come back. It's fucking cold out there. Guy
  19. I ended up getting the Gardiner/Bilson set. The fortepiano is an interesting sound but I wish it wasn't so quiet relative to the orchestra. Guy
  20. I like this the best out of the Prestige Dolphy I've heard (Outward Bound, Out There, two vols of Five Spot). The band is just really tight and the tune selection is excellent. That said, Out to Lunch is still my favorite Dolphy. Guy

    Thomas Chapin

Bumping this thread because I've been enjoying the incredible Sky Piece over the past few days. It's such a shame that he died so young. Guy
  22. Is anyone else interested in going to the Thursday night (Mar 2) show? Guy
  23. You like the Elektric Band, but are turned off by Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy? Weird. Guy
  24. ???
  25. That more or less covers it. It's nice in small doses but a bit excessive across two hours. edit: Didn't mean to agree with the statement "their concerts suck". Repetitive, but enjoyable. Guy
