Any idea how this show would be? Ab Baars Trio & Ken Vandermark - tomorrow night at the Victory Grill in Austin -
I don't understand how people can downplay Beck's talent. Especially his TONE...no other guitarist sounds like him. Period.

As a King's X fan since 1988, I'm SO HAPPY they will be touring with these guys.

Firefox - anyone else been having issues lately?
Shawn replied to Shawn's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've cleared the browser cache and java cache. It's still not keeping any cookies (despite having that option checked in Firefox). It's running a little faster since the re-install, but this is getting annoying. -
One of these days (when I have dependable income) I'll probably replace the albums I currently own. Rubber Soul Revolver Help Magical Mystery Tour Sgt Peppers White Album Abbey Road Past Masters (although I wish I could just get Volume 2 separately) That's all the Beatles I need.

I've been using Firefox for years with no issues, these problems are a fairly recent occurrence. Edit - Seems many people have been having problems (checked the Mozilla message boards). The recommended fix is to download a full installer from their site, clear the cache, close Firefox, delete the Mozilla directory, then re-install. I did that, guess I'll see what happens. -

Yeah, I'm considering either going back to IE or trying out Google Chrome or one of the other browsers. Any recommendations? -

I've been updating and the problems appear to be getting worse. There have been quite a few java updates recently, I wonder if that could be part of the problem. -
For the past month or so, I've been having a lot of trouble with firefox and I'm wondering if it's just me. It tends to crash when getting a Google page of search results (either the browser just shuts down, or I get a general protection fault error and have to kill it via the task manager). Sometimes it just doesn't load the page, it appears to go to the site but the page is completely blank. Usually after 2 or 3 tries it will load. Then starting yesterday, it's not keeping cookies any longer. Everytime I re-open the browser I have to log back into every site that I visit. I've checked the settings and nothing has been changed. I've tried IE and don't have the same issues. I also ran a full virus sweep and came back with no issues. Any ideas? Is it possessed?

Yeah, that's definitely a valid perception I would say. One thing I love about that era is the gap between the "jazzers" and "rockers" was alot more narrow than it became later. Plus music was still able to be music and hadn't been "sub-categorized" to death the way it is now.

I've been spending quite a bit of time recently listening to these styles. They are basically twins that seemed to develop almost simultaneously, one feeding off the other. They also had similar trajectories, reaching creative peaks quickly...then being watered down and dying...partially by their own hands, partially by record label interference...before they were killed off entirely by the retro hard bop uprising and punk. (I know, that's kind of a simplified view, but seems fairly accurate). I've been listening to progressive rock since I was a kid and the first jazz albums I ever heard were fusion records (McLaughlin, DiMeola, etc.). But I wasn't around to witness this stuff firsthand and we all know that time changes perceptions. So what was it like at the time? Where does it really begin? The common "legend" is that Bitches Brew was the catalyst...but that seems too easy. Miles of course is at the center since everyone that played with him during the late 60's ended up in major league fusion or rock acts. So did it start with Hendrix? The Beatles? What REALLY caused this explosion of creativity that spawned bands as diverse as Weather Report & King Crimson? How important is John McLaughlin's role in all this? Most importantly, to those that were around at the time, how exciting was this era?

I have one of DiMeola's solo albums (Eleganct Gypsy) and it is not bad. (Not great either.) Not much of the over-the-top corniness of Romantic Warrior. Guy Is that the album that contains "Racing With The Devil On A Spanish Highway"? That's one of the few DiMeola tunes that I've always liked. Although I've got a cover version from a band called Riot that smokes the original.

Poverty sucks----and I'm sooo tired of it....

I'm right there with ya buddy. I've been working just enough to not get kicked out onto the street (although family and friends have been assisting at times), sometimes I go sell some CDs to either put gas in the car or get some food, my clothes are shot, my shoes are shot, my car is damn near shot.... But you know what's not shot? Hope. I'm filled with it. I've spent most of my life depressed and feeling hopeless...but this time, as crappy as each individual day can get...I feel hopeful. I KNOW something is going to come along. I still feel that coming to Austin was the right thing for me to do and I don't intend to leave anytime soon. No more running for Shawn. -
I don't own any RTF, but I happened to be listening to one of those old CBS sampler discs earlier today...it contains the track Medieval Overture...I couldn't hit the skip button fast enough. I love fusion, been on quite a kick of it recently, but I don't think I'd have the stomach for much of this stuff if that track is any indication. On the flip side of the coin, I heard a track from the album "John McLaughlin - Electric Guitarist", I think I need to get that one.
-
That's one brave dude...as someone that has browsed many a Goodwill store, I must admit that I wouldn't have the stomach for it. The thing that amazes me about those Goodwill collections...is that I think there's a nefarious plot to spread the gospel of Al Hirt. Maybe he's the anti-Christ?

Battlestar Galactica (new version) - The mini-series was excellent, looking forward to these.

I never noticed this before, but Chewy is right (although it's nowhere near 6 seconds). The problem is they panned all the reverb to the right channel (morons). -
I love Bill Withers (at least the first 3 albums). The debut is staggeringly good, one of my favorites of all time.

See a few posts above...it's a beautiful album (yes, I said beautiful). The production is simply incredible, some of the best guitar tones I've heard in quite awhile. The album title is a dedication to the drummer's sister "Skye" who committed suicide when she was 14. I also highly recommend Blood Mountain, a very impressive album that showed them moving in this new direction. By the way, iTunes has an exclusive version of Crack The Skye in instrumental form as a bonus.

I also watched their Lamentations video which was incredible. I love progressive metal (no shock), but I hate Death Metal style vocals...so I'm slowly easing my way into their catalog. That's why I started with Damnation, because he's got a great voice when he sings clean. The newer albums (Ghost Reveries, etc), what are the vocals like on those albums? Also, I recommend checking out a really bizarre experimental band called "YOB", these guys are progressive doom, the vocalist reminds me of a cross between Geddy Lee & the guy from Supertramp. Killer stuff.
