Goooooooooooooooooooooooooool
Clunky replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
First game was a bit slow to get started by Italy deserved their win. Turkey were very poor on the whole , with the 2-0 loss flattering them. England look quite promising but they don't have Kieran Tierney so perhaps the Tartan army may be able to celebrate escaping the group stage. Well , at least I can dream..... -
The Soul Eyes set is outstanding , no idea why this has seen such limited availability even in Japan. PIm, I've said it before but it bears repeating , thank you for this. It's a really great piece of work you have done.

Hasaan Ibn Ali – Metaphysics: The Lost Atlantic Album
Clunky replied to king ubu's topic in New Releases
Sorry hear of the issues with your copy. I ordered an LP edition before I saw the comments above regarding sound quality. It was there with some trepidation that I listened to the LP when it arrived yesterday. I find the sound pretty decent with a good balance. Perhaps there's a difference between the sound of the different formats. Pope's sax sound is a little grating but that's more about him than the recording itself. He sounds a touch like Jackie McLean - ie a bit flat or off pitch. (I'm no musician so don't shoot me, if I'm using the wrong terms here). So I was pleasantly surprised. I don't think it's some rediscovered masterpiece but interesting to hear nonetheless.- 103 replies

I'm only missing 4 alternate takes so naturally I ordered it. Joe Henderson's BN sessions with Kenny D are amongst my favourite sessions . I've all of the titles on CD and LP ( a real mixture of McMasters, Music Matters, NY monos etc) . Pretty much the same situation and thinking lay behind me getting the recent Mobley set and I didn't regret getting it for one minute.

I wonder if they're sticking to CD releases because of licensing and general hassle related to put stuff out on vinyl. I'm comfortable with either LPs or CDs as long as they're done right. I cannot stand overpriced LPs which are anything but audiophile.

I'm impressed by the album. Meditative music for uncertain times.
-
I'm hoping they next move on to Eric Dolphy and release authorised editions of his June 1964 Parisian radio sessions. The sound on the probably unauthorised West Wind edition is nothing like as good as the recent issues (of other material) on Sam.

This is a lovely album , I've got it on a UK Brunswick LP.

Is anything known about the JiB vinyl ? I ask as my only vinyl from them to date (Group Sounds Four and Five) was less than perfect in terms of pressing. Nothing horrific but just a few more clicks than I generally get from recent vinyl issues. The sonic fidelity of their source tapes vary of course but it'd be good to hear of anyone else's experience with their vinyl editions. The CDs i've bought have been faultless.

Mosaic Sets but Especially Tina Brooks
Clunky replied to Dan Gould's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'm certain that Open Sesame CD issue was my introduction to Tina. Jazz was all pretty new to me around then in the late 80's. Although I liked what I heard it's really the passing of the years that has solidified my interest in his music. I simply haven't got bored listening to Tina Brooks in the way that others have out stayed their welcome in my collection.. -
my copy arrived yesterday , hoping to get the chance to play it today.

oh yes, me too...

Yesterday I received Volume 1 of "...at Utopia", i can see why you rate it so highly...Because of mix up by the seller i was earlier sent The Git Go in error but allowed to keep. So two very nice Waldron discs for the price of one.

this last couple of weeks I've been playing Mal pretty much non stop. Along the way picking up a few items the most outstanding of which is the Super Quartet at Sweet Basil. Quite rightly you give it 5 stars. This is a great service you're doing. A book surely beckons...

I'd ignored Redd's Blues because of poor reviews around the time the CD was released. I've been giving the session a listen and whilst it's clearly not a top drawer BN it still has plenty of interest. Jackie and Tina and what must have been a rare BN appearance by Benny Bailey. So its a bit like Lee Morgan's The Rajah , easy to see why it wasn't released at the time but well worth its belated release. It lacks the urgency of The Connection which is a favourite of mine but I'm happy i picked it up (cheaply!)

Likewise, I paid up in November with Soundohm. They have been very reassuring that all pre-ordered copies will get delivered- eventually !

I've had this music in my car for the past eight years or so - it's on an SD card with a random bunch of jazz. It's such a great album that I never tire of hearing. Sad loss of another great RIP

New Dark Tree records release of 1985 Roberto Miranda concert
Clunky replied to felser's topic in New Releases
really looking forward to this. -
Circles and the title track are stunning with all Joe’s hallmark sound. The opening track ‘You the night and the music’ seems out of place. Piano on this track sounds different- a bit metallic. Very impressed so far.

Importing/exporting UK/Europe after Brexit
Clunky replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
That's interesting about the 22 euro tax free threshold. I was hearing on BBC radio the other day that the tax free £15 allowance here has been (or will be?) removed for imports to the UK from all countries , not just the EU. Either overseas sellers register and collect UK VAT (for items less than £135) or UK customs collect at point of entry into the UK. The latter no doubt with a £12 handling charge added. Given the chaos I've little doubt that some consumers will be charged VAT at point of sale abroad and also at the UK border. Brilliant -
Recent landing from Poland Cecil Taylor ----- Lifting the bandstand----(Fundacja) Live quintet recording from Tampere 1998 with Paul Lovens, Tristan Honsinger a.o. I have a hard time evaluating CT discs and where they fit into his output but this is very well recorded and isn't short of excitement - but then when does he ever come up short.

This set will cause me a dilemma. I have everything (bar a few likely alternates) scattered across various CD series (McMaster, RvG, BNWorks etc) , LPs ( NY monos, Liberty, Music Matter etc) but and it's a big BUT I love this music a great deal. I was in a similar position with the Mobley set (although I didn't have one session) and I have no regrets getting all the music in one place mastered to a similar standard. First world problems....

A couple of nice Dutch CDs landed the other day Komen & Gaan - ICP Septet (ICP066) - just spinning this, as with most ICP releases it'll take some time to sink in Mij een Biet ! - Han & Guus - Han Bennink/Guus Janssen - improvised pieces by and large - not quite as playful as Groet from a decade ago but plenty to like.
