  1. I just caught a little of a minute-long mention on the national news (!). I think Bird's alto brought in something in the $225,000 range. The anchor mentioned Dizzy's "bent-bell flugelhorn" as well. Not sure what the Coltrane ALS manuscript went for. I hope these treasures went to good homes. Kansas City should have procured this alto instead of the piece-of-shit white plastic one they have. Edit: Oops, I see it's being discussed HERE.
  2. It's interesting you mention Sacramento record shopping. I remember many years ago hanging there for a few days when I was on the road and looking for a jazz record store. I can't remember the name of it, but I remember what I bought- Miles' Aura. I remember walking back to my hotel and at one point feeling momentarily disoriented, like I was dizzy and the ground was moving. The feeling passed and I returned to my hotel room and turned on the tube to see that the October 17, 1989 earthquake had just taken place. Anyway, that's the memory this thread brought up. I hope no one here lost anyone on that terrible day.
  3. Well, here's the thing about that: The only reason people come to this club is to hear good live music. It ain't for the ambiance, let me tell you. We had people begging us to keep playing when we were taking breaks, begging us for encores, etc. They want to dance and that's why they come. Half the place was filled with people who came just to see us. And the manager knows it. That's good. You have some "hand"! You might just get what you want, if they actually are reluctant to let you go. As they SHOULD be!
  4. Wow, I'll bet your chops were already better than his. How bad did you cut him? B-) Sorry SS. Couldn't resist.
  5. There's this...... which is also available on DVD I believe. Carl Fontana is on it too.
  6. I don't know how it is where you live, but my experience will the AF of M is that they have NO balls and NO influence anymore. They exist to help out orchestras and that's about it.
  7. So does that mean that we can look forward to: "Dan's A to Z: The Sequel: LP Collection"?
  8. Jim, I agree that no one needs to take bullshit like this. But you KNOW that if you walk, the owner will get someone to play there (or NO ONE at all) for whatever small amount of bread he offers. There will always be someone willing to do it, and yes, they usually suck, but it's surprising how little bar owners/patrons seem to care or even notice. If you don't need the gig/headache, leave. But don't think organizing a united front will change his mind at all. He won't be "enlightened". The situation sucks and this post sounds pretty pessimistic, but that seems to be how it works. You just need to decide how big a bite of that shit sandwich you can eat. B-) *Change* is frequently a drag, but it's inevitable. Maybe it's time to move on.
  9. Dan, I'm surprised you don't have this one! I didn't see it under Wes or Wynton.
  10. Definitely this one, and I think there's another with these two, right?
  11. I'm very sorry to hear that. RIP. I have (and enjoy) The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess. How's this one?
  12. I'd be interested to hear about this. Would've been a cool event to attend. Damn, he's really gone.
  13. Max Bennett- Max Bennett/Max Bennett Plays Hermeto Pascoal- Slaves Mass Frank Rosolino- Complete Recordings featuring Sonny Clark George Russell- Complete Bluebird Recordings (Jazz Workshop/Hal McKusick Jazz Workshop) Kai Winding/Carl Fontana- Complete Ohio Sessions
  14. If it were up to me, I'd choose Strange Liberation- I thought Frisell fit in well. I like Thousand Evenings too, but I've never quite warmed up to Freak In. So that's my order. I do have all three.
  15. It's good. Jimmy went out with a bang.
  16. As you wish, -e-: The CD is a combination of two 1955 sessions: Max Bennett plays bass on all. Carl Fontana, trombone Nick Travis, trumpet Charlie Mariano, alto Jack Nimitz, bari Dave McKenna, piano Mel Lewis, drums Johnny Jaguar My Heart Belongs to Daddy* Something to Remember You By I Hadn't Anyone 'Til You* IRA of the I.R.A. Max is the Factor Strike Up the Band* 13 Toes Polkadots and Moonbeams* Nice Work If You Can Get It Taking A Chance on Love* Sweet Sue* Blues* S'posin'* *Fontana w/rhythm section ....and the other session: Frank Rosolino, trombone Charlie Mariano, alto Claude Williamson, piano Stan Levey, drums Helen Carr, vocals (+) Rubberneck Just Max They Say+ Jeepers Creepers T.K. I'll Never Smile Again Do You Know Why+ Sweet Georgia Brown Fontana is in great form. He doesn't sound much different in 1955 than he did later. I would recommend this CD without reservation if you are a Fontana or Rosolino fan. Both are well represented. And of course Charlie Mariano!
  17. Because it was sold out or because it was Wynton? B-)
  18. I've been enjoying it. It has a certain amount of......oh, what's the word I'm looking for....sounds like PLEEEEEZE.......or CHEEEEZE......or WHEEEEZE.... B-) Joey D sounds good on the piano IMHO. There are some synth strings on the Jobim but they don't create much collateral damage. J.O.S. went out with a bang.
  19. Yeah, you missed a few things while you were away, but we've been watching the store. Welcome back! Hope you and Alison had a great time.
  20. The twelve tone scale is a collection of notes, aka the chromatic scale (all half steps). The term "twelve tone" is also used to describe a type of composition- the notes are ordered into a "tone row". Coltrane's Miles Mode head or Brookmeyer's ABC Blues are examples of a tone row. Atonality refers to the nature of a composition, how these notes are assembled. A piece can be atonal w/o necessarily being twelve-tone (or chromatic)based. Atonality and dissonance have the same relationship- a piece can be atonal w/o being dissonant, and vice-versa. The terms are related, but they don't mean quite the same thing.
  21. He and Mrs. b3-er took a little trip to NYC.
  22. I just ordered and received this from *the bastards*. I've been looking for it 'cause it has some great Carl Fontana AND Frank Rosolino; Charlie Mariano and Nick Travis are on it as well and play some very nice stuff. Odd cover, no? Looks like ol' Max is giving the one finger salute.
  23. If you're able to take advantage of Borders buy-3-get-one-free promotion they're about 9 bucks each (that's with a price of $11.99 each).
