  1. One of Beehive's best album! Jim Neumann knew how to pick his musicians, and his drummers! Roy Haynes appeared on several of the label's sessions!
  2. Jack Montrose 'Blues and Vanilla' (RCA Victor, mono) with Red Norvo, Joe Maini, Jim Hall, etc...
  3. I am aware that a book of his photos is scheduled for publication by the end of his years but I did not realize until today that his second book, the superb 'Jazz Memories', came out in France only (1995, Editions Filipacchi) and seems to have not been published elsewhere. It's even better than his first book of photos 'L'Oeil du Jazz' (1985, Editions Filipacchi). That one went through several printings and was published in the USA. 'Jazz Memories' seems to command high prices at Amazon.com!
  4. I have never seen that one! Survival was Rashied Ali's label. The album is not mentioned on this site.
  5. This is a dream that hopefully will become a reality when all the music is made available to the general public!
  6. Abbey Lincoln 'Abbey's Blue' (Riverside, mono)
  7. These three 'new' takes were on the Riverside box!
  8. Jazz in 3/4 time for $7? By all means YES even if it's not the original EmArcy blue label!
  9. The Lord Discography lists that July 29, 1950 session by Johnny Dankworth with these four titles, as appearing on Esquire (BN titles are obviously variations): - Sam's Song - The Haunted Ballroom Theme - Seven not out (Tea for me) - Cherokee
  10. I go away for a nice weekend and what do I face when I get back... Herman Leonard is gone! Abbey Lincoln is gone! I returned with a smiling face and now my heart is so sad!
  11. This is devastating news One of the very last one of a breed that is slowly disappearing. And yes he was a great person. I had the privilege of meeting him when he was in Paris working for Berclay Records. My favorite photo (but there are hundreds more of fabulous Herman Leonard images!)
  12. What he said. Others - in no specific order - Johnny Hodges, Art Pepper, Jimmy Lyons, Sonny Stitt, Phil Woods, Jackie McLean and so many others!

    Curtis Amy

Curtis Amy's widow is the great singer Merry Clayton who appeared on several of the most celebrated albums of the past decades. She is the singer who duets with Mick Jagger on the Rolling Stones 'Gimme Shelter'.
  14. Sonny Stitt ' The Saxophones of Sonny Stitt' (Roost, mono)
  15. A controversial way of spending public money... Article in The Independent today. Many taxpayers must be frowning on the jazz spending: A further £3,450 was spent with Improwise, a company which claims to use a live jazz quartet to "demonstrate a range of skills, techniques and issues in a way which is unusual, inspiring, memorable and always effective". The Improwise website
  16. I'ld bet the Bennie Green photo was taken around 63rd Street near where the BN offices were located back then. Looks like it's Broadway going slightly diagonally in the background! Great cover My vinyl copy is slightly green-tainted instead of the regular yellowish color. It's a Japanese LP which was offered as a present to Japanese fans when they purchased a certain number of Japanese BN LPs! It came without the usual white and blue BN label, just a plain white label with the BLP 1587 catalogue number plus a 'Not for Sale' indication. Won't say who sold it to me
  17. Happy Birthday Kinuta
  18. Gene Shaw 'Carnival Sketches' (Argo, mono, sand-colored label)

His Mosaic Select is one of my very favorite from the series! Wish Mosaic had gone to the box set format to include more sessions!
  20. France's rejuvenated team was defeated 1-2 by Norway in Oslo last night but proved they were willing. The team played its first match since the World Cup disaster and showed promises after only a three-day get-together! New coach Laurent Blanc still has work to do with the young players!
