  1. 36/38 missed Mahavishnu and Stanley Clarke!
  2. Pee Wee Russell 'Ask Me Now' (Impulse, orange label, mono)
  3. Obit in The New York Times today: Hale Smith
  4. Same here. Purchased the album right after it was released in 1967 when visiting NYC. When I had the choice back then, I would get mono versions. All that was available at the shop I got the vinyl was the stereo issue!
  5. Very interesting footage from the Paris concert at the Mutualité. I attended the concert (it was held a few days after a concert by the Ornette Coleman trio - with David Izenson and Charles Moffett - at the same place). Don't think this was shown on the French TV ORTF (the unique broadcaster back then) at the time. It must have been shown much later!
  6. Taschen will publish very shortly 'Alex Steinweiss, Inventor of the Modern Album Cover', a coffeetable book-sized volume on one of the most creative record album designers. A handsome book much better - and much more expensive - than Taschen's 'Jazz Covers', a very disappointing enterprise. The book is printed in a limited edition of 1,500 copies. Taschen's Alex Steinweiss' Click on the book's frontpage (Leaf through!) for a thorough view of the book's content!
  7. Grachan Moncur 'Evolution' (BN, mono)
  8. It is a Hank world...
  9. http://www.rnw.nl/english/article/dutch-ja...ia-beck-dies-84 "Dutch jazz pianist and singer Pia Beck has died. She suffered a heart attack on Thursday morning at her home in Torremolinos in Spain. Pia Beck, who was 84, is considered one of the best pianists the Netherlands has ever known. She began her career shortly after the end of WWII playing the piano and singing in the Miller Sextet. A few years later she started her own combo. Her first composition, Pia's Boogie, became a hit. She regularly toured Europe and had her own stage in the seaside resort of Scheveningen near The Hague. In the 1950 and 60s she made regular appearances in the United States. New Orleans and Atlanta conferred honorary citizenships on her. In 1965 Pia Beck emigrated to the Costa del Sol, where she lived with her partner Marga Samsonowski, who died in June. Earlier, Pia Beck was married to jazz pianist Pim Jacobs. Pia Beck as many people remember her. Listen to a fragment of "Call me". (Photo: piabeck.com)"
  10. 2010 Grammy Hall of Fame Selections announced.

  13. Bob Willoughby's website. Check the Music/Jazz Images section!
  14. Great record! Essential for all George Russell and Gil Evans fans. Oh my! Yes! Yes! also for Hal McKusick fans... Now spinning: Hal McKusick Quintet (Coral) with Art Farmer, Eddie Costa, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson!
  15. Hal McKusick 'Jazz Workshop' (RCA)
  16. Freddie Green may have been chunk-a-chunking all those years but he contributed mightily to a unique sound. There was no rhythm section like a Basie rhythm section and Green's presence there may have been discreet but it was unmistakable. I don't mind his not soloing. Just give me back his chunk-a-chunk!
  17. Red Garland 'Manteca' (Prestige, yellow label) with Paul Chambers, Art Taylor plus Ray Barreto
  18. From the INA vaults: Jean-Baptiste Illinois Jacquet in concert at the Maison de l'ORTF in Paris in 1973 with Wild Bill Davis and Al Bartee.
  19. I won't be looking for the new Giddins/DeVeaux book! But I will be looking for new installments in the Christern blog. A fascinating site
  20. I'm sold Had some doubts about this new release but the respond here has made me a believer by now! Added this to my puchase list!
  21. Discs 3 and 4 now. It's getting even better!
  22. Really ? Wow . He might be my least favorite with the bow . Some of my very first jazz experiences were listening to the Miles Davis quintet albums with Trane, Garland, PC and Philly Jo. Loved everything there. And that included PC's arco bass appearances. Thought this was the way arco bass should be played That was a bit more than half a century ago. I have moved on on many ideas and impressions since but not on PC!
