  1. 'The Jaywalker' went its quiet way when it was released several years ago but it ranks with the best from Ellingtonia
  2. Can't recall having seen that railroad tracks cover Thanks, Chas. This cover never got to my destination!
  3. These sets came from Membran in Germany before they were released in Japan. Membran Quadromania (type Quadromania in the Search window) I have not bought any of these 4CD sets but I have several of the Membran 10CD boxes (available for something like €10 a set) including the Duke, the Fats Waller, the Artie Shaw, the Piazzola and am happy with these purchases.
  4. There were a couple of 2CD limited-edition sets that came out on the Italian label Emanon. They were issued in cooperation with the 'Jazz Is Universal ' society. I have one of them which has tracks from four albums 'Volcano', 'Rue Chaptal','At Her Majesty's Pleasure' and 'Off Limits'. Good remastering on these. Any idea if additional sets came out?
  5. There was an earlier thread about this. Can't find it right now. You can hear Miles Davis' pre-surgery voice on this 1949 record:
  6. Miles Davis/Gil Evans 'The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings', discs 7 and 8
  7. Happy Birthday, young lady
  8. There was an LP reissue of this album on the Trip label! Nothing wrong with the date as far as I remember. Time for an updated reissue. Did not realize it's not available on CD if I'm not mistaken!!
  9. Another member of the Stanley Turrentine fans club here! Love his sound and LOVE the albums he recorded with Jimmy Smith during the glorious BN days ('Midnight Special', 'Back at the Chicken Shack', 'Prayer Meetin''.
  10. Boris Rose is the jazz preservation hero who recorded tons of material (radio broadcasts mainly) from the late '40s into the '80s. He is the one who recorded Bird (and many others) at the Royal Roost, Lester Young, Count Basie and many others at Birdland. Also Charles Mingus, Cecil Taylor, etc... Some of his tapes were released on bootleg albums (a few made it on very legal releases). There is a lot of the material which still remains dormant. Mosaic would have a hard time in getting authorisations from participants if they were ever to try releasing sets from these tapes. One can still dream

Marla, it was reissued as a CD in France by Dreyfus records. Might be hard to get by now. I have the original vinyl release (on the long gone French label AllLife).
  12. The Boris Rose recordings
  13. You are probably refering to this book: Le Jazz est-il encore possible?. (Is Jazz Still Possible?). The author turned away jazz criticism and - unless he retired recently - is now a successful book editor!

    Another favorite...
  17. Almost 1,5K and not even the original release Chet Baker/I Get Chet That Felsted is a British release of the original French Barclay 'Chet Baker and his Quintet with Bobby Jaspar'.

Clem, where do these stand? - Dave Brubeck's Red, Hot and Cool - Red Holloway - Chairam Mao's Little Red Book
  19. John Coltrane 'Crescent' (Impulse, mono)
  20. Another recommendation for Cyrille's solo album 'What About' from the Byg/Actuel series. Cyrille is one of the most subtile and innovative player around. Any of his collaborations with Cecil Taylor has to be heard. Get the CT Unit 'The Great Concert' albums if you want to hear how inventive he can be! Also check the various sessions he recorded with Walt Dickerson. Two wonderfully compatible musicians. Not to forget Marion Brown's 'Afternoon of a Georgia Faun' on ECM and any albums he recorded with Jimmy Lyons. Plus so many more... Lots of love for Cyrille here!
  21. RonS is right about 'Full House'! This Riverside live album is the one to get if you're looking for live dates by Wes Montgomery. It smokes! And Johnny Griffin is on fire!
  22. The Analogue may look alike but they lack prestige
  23. Eric Dolphy 'Out There' (New Jazz, mono)
  24. Something like this was bound to happen... From AP:
