How Many Kenny G-Unit Cd(s) Do You Own??
Uncle Skid replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
No guilty conscience, simply a case of one-upmanship to all the Kenny-G lovers on this board who think they have bad taste in music. Just don't get me started on Aldo Nova or Loverboy again, man! -
How Many Kenny G-Unit Cd(s) Do You Own??
Uncle Skid replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
You mean like Spyro Gyra? ← I'll fess up to owning one G-Man CD: Silhouette, from 1988. I bought it used, probably in '88 or '89. The sad thing is that this isn't the worst music I've ever purchased -- somewhere, buried deep in the bowels of my basement, is a vinyl copy of Michael Bolton's debut album. Seriously. -
Ed, If Pittsburgh or Buffalo doesn't work out for whatever reason, and you still feel like driving, they play Grand Rapids, Michigan quite often. That's less than an hour from here, and I'm always up for a show and board "hang" there. I'd bet Chuck (and possibly Upright Bill) would be as well. Looks like there are two coming up in September: September 13 - 9:00pm to 1:00am Founders Brew Co. - Grand Rapids, MI September 23 - 7:30pm to 9:30pm Schuler Books - Grand Rapids, MI Be sure to let us know if you're heading this way! -- Mark

How does your spouse feel about you hanging here?
Uncle Skid replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Forums Discussion
... abducted by some Jazz stalker ... That really strikes me as funny for some reason... brings up a mental image a Kenny G fan being kidnapped and forced to listen to Albert Ayler or late Coltrane or something. My spouse used to think I was a bit crazy hanging out on line with a bunch of "jazz geeks". But after meeting and having dinner with Chuck and Ann (as well as Mr. and Mrs. Upright Bill, and catesta/Katrina), she sees that while were are all definitely jazz geeks, we aren't all that bad! It also gave her the opportunity to see that I'm not the only one buys tons of jazz CDs. The trick is to only hang out with board members who own *way* more CDs than I do!! -
Unbelievable!!

Sign me up please, Mr. Upright! If you need any help with copying and/or distribution of the CDs, let me know. I'd be glad to help.

Is this some dutch female I don't know? ← You must be thinking of Terry VanGroos. I think she's the meteorologist on WOOD-TV or something... I'm planning on tuning in -- I want to find out if Jim gave a shout out to all his homies that knew the band before they got big and famous!

Clinton album shows how he likes to be big hitter
Uncle Skid replied to Johnny E's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Man, I thought this was about a different Clinton! -
Steve Erquiaga - Cafe Paradiso. The entire CD is solo acoustic guitar, some tracks have that "Spanish" sound. Check out track #2 in particular. Steve's website here.

Miles Davis' sets in longbox format?
Uncle Skid replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That reminds me... I need to order that one from yourmusic.com! I bet it won't be last call for quite a long time -- I still see metal spine versions of the Quintet box at local stores, and it's still available at CD Universe as well. I guess they aren't pulling them off the shelves once the long box arrives. Which makes we wonder what effect that has on casual Miles Davis fans, seeing all of these box sets with the same titles but different packaging. My local bookstore has multiple copies of both versions of a few of them; I'm sure it's confusing to some. -
Miles Davis' sets in longbox format?
Uncle Skid replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Earlier discussion here. I have two of the long boxes (Quintet 65-68 and Gil Evans), and I find myself occasionally wishing I had bought the "metal spine" versions, if only so that they would match the Seven Steps box. The cost savings was nice, though. Yourmusic.com has the Quintet long box for $35.94 -- the other version is around $100! -
July '05 Mosaic Running Low & Last Chance
Uncle Skid replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Actually, on my first time through, I thought that parts of it were a little MORE "pop-ish" than I had expected. Not that there's anything wrong with it. ← Me, too. Nothing wrong with most of it, but I can live without "The Rock and Roll Waltz". -
Uncle Skid, is it the place we went to after the Von Freeman show? That would be Rock Bottom! Mark ← Yup. That's the place!

July '05 Mosaic Running Low & Last Chance
Uncle Skid replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Wow, you're a genuine idiot! Read the topic, moron, and go troll somewhere else! Meanwhile, anyone have the latest numbers on copies left of J. J. Johnson?? ← Dang, that's a little harsh. SS1 is definitely not a troll. I'd bet there are less than 100 copies of the JJ by now... if you don't already have it, don't be a procrastinator!! -

Uncle Skid replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Mine is #2973. ← And mine's #2974! ← #2949 checkin' in -- I didn't have very many vocalists in my collection either, and it sure seems like I picked a good place to start changing that! -
Am I the only guy on the planet who finds Jessica not that attractive? I find her even less appealing after the "Daisy Duke" workout -- she's too damn skinny! Catherine Bach: now that's what I'm talking 'bout!

Regarding beer -- somewhere between the Jazz Showcase and the Jazz Record Mart, there is a restaurant/brewery that had some decent stuff on tap. Unfortunately, I don't recall the name of it, but maybe Chuck or sheldonm can help me out here... Are you taking the kids to any jazz shows? The Showcase Sunday matinee is very kid friendly -- my two kids really enjoyed seeing Cedar Walton there this summer.

Charlie Murphy says "Chappelle's Show is over, man. Done.". Dang, I hope he's wrong.

Any suggestions for best photo restoration
Uncle Skid replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Berigan, you might want to check out the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). It's free (downloadable) software, and has some pretty sophisticated photo retouching features. I've used it under Linux, but there is also a version for Windows. One major complaint with the program is that its user interface is difficult (non-intuitive) to use, but I believe that the newer versions have done things to make it better. Here's an article showing some of its features: Photo Touch Up and Enhancement in the GIMP -
Paging Soulstation1 -- looks like somebody needs "IT"!! (and "Tenderly" is AWESOME!)

Got my copy today (a nice benefit of living only around 100 miles aways from Lansing); listening to "Smoking Section" right now. Ya gotta love those seamless time changes!
