  1. a lot of Coltrane and Miles, but most of all Anthony Braxton. The Iridium box set (still struggling with that one; I may never make it all the way through!), the duet with Joe Fonda that was reissued on Clean Feed (from 1995, I believe), the GTM Six Compositions box, and I've been exploring the Hatology label with the Jazz Loft's periodic sales. As for non-jazz, I've been really enjoying the latest Neil Young Chrome Dreams II, Ryan Adams, Jay Farrar's solo catalog, and Son Volt
  2. Ann Arbor is the headquarters of Borders Group, so they are frequently in the local business news. Indeed they are downsizing Waldenbooks, as part of a chain-wide restructuring. Waldenbooks are being turned into Borders Express stores, and new store openings are going to be some sort of prototype Borders media store, whatever that means. There will be one of these new Borders stores opening in Ann Arbor in a few months, so I will check it out as soon as they are open. But it doesn't seem that they are going under, in spite of all the bad news about their stock price and revenues.
  3. I saw Roscoe Mitchell, George Lewis and Muhal Richard Abrams in concert at Kerrytown in Ann Arbor, and even got to briefly thank Roscoe after the show with a handshake and a few words. By far the best jazz-related event for me.
  4. I got it because I did not have a copy of the Ellington disc, so for about $14 it was still cheaper than buying that CD on its own!
  5. I want that Mulligan Concert band set!
  6. wow. Sad to hear it. Get yourself out west and clear your head a bit, and get internet access wherever you end up!
  7. not music, but I will probably get myself the Miles Davis Reader from Downbeat, and if I am feeling very generous, I will get myself the new John Coltrane Reference.
  8. at least it isn't Bryan Adams
  9. During the 2002 Olympics, I preferred to watch the CBC broadcasts of hockey, but at least there wasn't the usual drop-off in quality of the broadcasts when I had to switch to CNBC, because Chevy was handling the NBC portion of Olympic hockey that year.
  10. wow. Sad news. I watched a lot of his Blue Jays broadcasts with Tony Kubek and Fergie Olver in the 80s.
  11. I always thought Born in the USA by Springsteen was one of the worst album covers that I've ever seen. Who thought that was a good idea??
  12. his group? is that the 12+1 unit that was featured on the Iridium box set? that would be pricey
  13. can we get Braxton to show up? Or maybe Roscoe Mitchell?
  14. let's have it in Ann Arbor! if not, Chicago could work for me
  15. Streaming came out in 2006.

  17. isn't turn available at Jazz Loft?

Yes, you are privileged to have a fine local station. I know what you mean about the vocals... It really puzzles me as to exactly what is in the minds of the consultants who are programming these stations. Just what audience are they attempting to appeal to? It's pretty obvious that folks already attuned to jazz are tuning out as fast as they tune in. oh, and one other odd stat from the otherwise fine WEMU: their playlists dating from August of this year list the Bruce Hornsby jazz album as their most played album. I haven't heard it, but could that really be getting the most airplay on a NPR/jazz station??

I'm lucky because WEMU out of EMU in Ypsilanti, MI still plays jazz (though I only find the evening programming interesting, as the morning jazz is largely vocals, and afternoons is a lot of blues mixed in, which I can only take very little of), and their hosts are pretty knowledgeable. They are also a big supporter of Organissimo!
  20. my local Borders has it.
  21. sorry but I don't think it will be possible for me this weekend. It's been a rough week, I was sick Monday, daughter and wife sick currently, and now my son appears to be getting it. There's no way I could make it tonight. I'm going to make it back out to one of these shows, I promise!
  22. I wish I could go see the big O tonight, but family needs come first!
  23. Probably, depending on the weather, and the family. I don't live so close to downtown anymore so I have to negotiate I-94 now to get to Ann Arbor, so weather is always a factor.
  24. I'm in for a donation, later this week. I look at it like a tuition: I've learned plenty from visiting this place and meeting some of the people.
  25. Man, you guys are getting CONSTANT name-drops on WEMU for the Gracie's show this weekend! Between every newsbreak, etc, they are running a promo for the Gracie's event, with Organimisso playing in the background. Sounds good!
