  7. From the site: August 11, 2009- SERIES 4 Re-announced! Wow! What a summer. This series has been the most challenging to put together, yet one of the most rewarding with new relationships at the BBC and INA in France. As you can see from the last entry we've had to make a change in the lineup. Due to circumstances beyond our control we've had to hold back Max Roach for another series. The Erroll Garner material is stellar and we feel, more than makes up for the loss of Roach. Also, the Coleman Hawkins DVD has significantly changed with the video restoration of the 1962 concert earning it a spot on the main DVD. Here are the titles, coming out in October of 2009: * Coleman Hawkins- Live in '62 & '64- (w/ Sweets Edison and Jo Jones) * Art Blakey- Live in '65- (w/ Freddie Hubbard) * Erroll Garner - Live in '63 & '64 * Jimmy Smith- Live in '69 * Woody Herman- Live in '64 * Anita O'Day- Live In '63 & '70 * Art Farmer- Live In '64- (w/ Jim Hall) * Boxed Set featuring bonus performances, including a half-hour Coleman Hawkins concert from London in 1966, with Benny Carter and Louie Bellson.
  8. Haven't heard it so can't comment on sound or music, but one thing that's a necessity for most big band recordings is to capture the bite of the trumpet section. If the engineer misses that, the whole recording can be a bit of a downer. Trumpet dynamics sound ok and it's a good recording, don't get me wrong. Specifically, I was referring to the drum cymbals which don't have that "bite". Maybe it's the monitors used and I know Klipsch give a brighter sound than some speakers.
  9. First listen and I generally agree with the above comments but need a few more plays. Is it me or does the high end sound a little flat? I always wonder when you have "legends" who are in their 60 or 70s as the recordists, is the high end flatter than it needs to be due to their hearing loss at higher frequencies? I'm listening through my Klipsch Heresys in class A.
  10. This arrived while I was away so on the play list for tonight. Anyone else listened to this yet?
  11. Self-Portrait gives you a broad overview of Artie's entire career, including the excellent 1949 big band and the second edition of the Gramercy Five. I guess it depends on how into AS you are. If you could only get one Self-Portrait might be a better bet...but is it still readily available? I thought it had gone OOP. I've already got a fair amount of what the Mosaic box covers, but I'll be getting the set anyway. let's see if mosaic SQ make this set the one
  12. taiyo yuden premium. just google for vendors-more you buy , the lower the price-look for free shipping
  13. sent you a friends request on facebook so I can watch the vid!
  14. 1994 St Clement "Howell Mountain" in magnum tonight . Lovely example of an aged Napa cabernet.
  15. how do you identify the cd as a "target"?
  16. I have a friend who traded for it on tape, then VHS, DAT and CDR, then downloaded it for some perceived improvement. He admitted that due to his collecting sickness he never got around to listening to the improvements after the 2nd upgrade tape trade. The copy I have I traded for so I've had it awhile, and while it was likely improved upon since my copy this official version sure sounds better than that. I downloaded 2 different upgrades on Louisville after getting a trade copy so the jump isn't as big, but still nice. Just like with jazz reissues you buy I don't bother with upgrading some things, but Louisville is one of things I do. If they blu-ray this or go holographic octophonic, I'm there! pretty much what I hear-RT 6/16 more of an upgrade that 6/18
  17. There's a long thread on the Hoffman board (aren't they all over there!) re the SQ of this box. Most posters aren't particularly thrilled with it but its been a while since I listened to it so I can't really comment. Of course, if you don't know the reference systems of all the naysayers, it's hard to decide who's right.
  18. This was truly a memorable experience. The love of family and the musicianship was both joyful and fulfilling.
  19. He was terrible recently at Blues Alley. In a rather surly mood and no one at our table liked the lame Chick Corea 70s sound his other keyboard was getting from his cheesie synth. Byron Landham almost, almost made up for this far less than lackluster performance. When pressed, JD said he was sick of the guitar. Well, we were sick of his sound as well.
  20. paypal sent. Sorry it can't be more but I'll try and send $$ when I can
  21. We'll be there. Article in the WP called Branford's quartet the best in jazz today. Wayne Shorter, et. al might dispute that statement though I honestly haven't listened to much Marsalis music in quite a while especially after Wynton's pomposity in the Ken Burns series. Still the whole family with Billy Taylor should be quite an evening. I guess I can put up with Harry Connick Jr. as well.
  22. took a couple of listens to absorb, but overall quite enjoyable. SQ just ok, IMO. Looking forward to the show on the 23rd. I will see if I can get the cd signed.
  23. Silver Morning remains a favorite. If anyone has a cd of this album they are willing to sell at a reasonable price, please PM me. RIP Kenny Rankin
