  1. audio interview with WS from 1979 http://www.jazzcorner.com/innerviews/
  2. as always a stellar lineup. Rod Stewart was a surprise though
  3. I had a great night taking the ferry from the Embarcadaro to Yoshis and seeing the Dave Holland big band. I really liked being able to pick my seat before the perfromance and then grabbing a bite in the japanese restaurant in the same building. A very pleasant evening indeed and one this eastcoaster hopes to repeat soon.
  4. Thanks-very interesting ane enlightening. That was a good period for Stan and it shows in the interview. "Voyage" was the record he refers to in the interview and it's wonderful, relaxed yet stimulating.
  5. One thing I noticed was the similar styles between Buddy Rich and Sonny Payne. The liner notes for the Rich disc comment on how big a fan of the Basie band Rich was and it's very interesting to watch the two discs back to back. Glad I have all 9.
  6. guess they weren't jazz fans-my gain. Thanks for the links.
  7. based on streaming disc 2, I agree. 76 overall is a mixed bag for me.
  8. anyone else got this? I watched the Buddy Rich and part of the Quincy Jones and Basie discs and I'm glad I got the whole tamale. 9 DVDs in all but each one available separately. Thanks to craiglist I got it cheap.
  9. the Stepping Stones rerelease was a highlight for me last year. I'm glad I got to see him, if only once. I remember I saw the first show and went back to the dorm and dragged a few folks over for the second.

yep, B&B should be on the list. another really nice one is Voyage. My copy is German and I'm not sure it was ever relased on cd in the US. Recorded when Stan was artist in residence at Stanford and in a good place in his life as his playing demonstrates.
  11. I've been using TY unbranded for several years with no complaints. Besides the other retailers mentioned, check meritline dot com.
  12. You can stream Disc 2 of the set here: http://www.musicbox-online.com/media.html scroll down

Desert Lady and Pyramid are two I like. A fine artist. The Carnegie Hall concert with the TA big band is good as well. I saw them with guest artist Frank Wess at Blues Alley in DC many moons ago. Great show.
  14. Historic venue to be sure but I was there a few months ago and found it wayyyyy overpriced. Was the ownership change more recent than my visit?
  15. The remasterd Pretenders I and II both with excellent bonus discs (especially II)
  16. I'm glad the Smithsonian offers jazz but I've found it far from a good listening space unless you get there wayyy early. On the other hand, Twins on U is a good space. I saw some guy playing a B3 there recently- what were their names?- organgrinders or something like that ))

jimmyheath dot com. He's personally responded twice to my emails. His new cd is "Turn up the Heath" and is a big band record! planetarts dot org has it.
  20. this is a good site for info on HDTV: www.hdguru.com
  21. I just bought a plasma and an Oppo digital upconverting dvd player which I thought was the way to go until they sort out the format issue and prices begin to drop (which they are beginning to do).
  22. there were 140 CJB as of last week. I need to get this.
  23. My copy of Ellington's 65-72 recordings "disappeared" some time ago and I need to replace it. All good suggestions above-I'd add a French cd I bought on ebay a few years ago-DE and his orchestra at the Theatre des Champs Elysees 1/29-30/65. An excellent recording and the band is in fine form with an interesting set of older and recent compositions. Disc 2 leads off with Take.... which takes a while to get going as Duke is late to the stage due to an overlong session with his hairdresser! Recommended.
  24. the 6-4-78 sb of the UCSB show is up on dime and worth a download. It features the band in fine form with the famous "Harley" intro to NFA.
  25. BUMP! If just a few folks will paypal Jim $10 every month, he could at least break even with board expenses. I don't think $10 is a lot to ask. Jim doesn't like to ask for donations so I will. Don't you enjoy this forum?? Think about it!!!
