  1. Is a Japanese issue the only way to get a hold of Jackie Mac's 'Hipnosis'? The title tune keeps buzzing around in my head and I want to get the disc, but no luck on Tower or BN so far in locating the disc? Anyone know where I could get this domestically? Is it OOP in the USA? Thanks loads for any leads.
  2. I was flipping around the dial on Saturday night and caught some live Prince on MTV2(The one that has some music.) He was excellent! On the part that I saw, he only sang, but his band SMOKED! He had a very funky bass player, a 4 or 5 piece horn section with some good players, and a good guitar player who stuck to just rhythm playing, and a pretty solid drummer. They were playing stuff inspired by James Brown/Sly Stone/George Clinton from late 60s/early 70s, of course with the Prince touch, thick and greazy funk that had me shaking on the sofa. Rainy day, if that's the band he brings to the concert you're going to, you are in for a treat- they're very good.
  3. A new landmark in cinema history- thanks for the laugh, RDK!
  4. I recall seeing the program, but I don't remember when. If you want to see it for any sort of insight on Miles, forget it. It was a pathetic interview by Harry Reasoner, where he even asked Miles how he felt about white people today! The interview would have been much better handled by Ed Bradley, who at least has some familiarity with Miles and his music. Instead, what we got was a taciturn Miles with a patronizing Reasoner for all the country to see. I remember walking away from the tube really pissed at the botched opportunity to present an important artist.
  5. Now Weizen, this is not a political thread, be nice...
  6. Another coincidence in this last episode: when Tony S. has the panic attack and can't make the heist where Tony B. gets busted, he blames some --------(racial epithet I won't repeat) who jumped him. When Tony S. asks Tony B. why he's limping, Tony B. blames it on some -------(same thing!) who jumped him.
  7. He went to, or was going to see Horace Silver on 5/1, so he might not even be home yet, or not yet unpacked and ready to fire up his computer. I very much want to know what he did and how he enjoyed his trip. The weather certainly cooperated with his plans, as it was supposed to rain part of Saturday and almost all day Sunday, but there was actually almost no rain.
  8. The gambler-junkie went into rehab- Chris drove him to meet his sponsor and told him they'd settle the remaining gambling debt when he got out of rehab.
  9. Maybe Tony S. still feels so much guilt about not being there the night of the botched heist that jailed Tony B. that he's trying to protect him at all costs, even to the point of getting embroiled into a mob war. Tony S. also thinks of Tony B. more like his brother than his cousin. By placing family above business, Tony S. is digging himself a very deep hole.
  10. I think they're trying to show Carmela backed into a corner with no options but to go back to Tony. She can't get a divorce lawyer, Tony's being cheap about the allowance,Tony's income is hidden, etc. That said, I could see where you might get tired of seeing it, but maybe David Chase is trying to show(slowly) the total disintegration of both of his families, with Christopher ticked, Tony B. going off the rails, Carmela making the divorce moves, etc. I think it would be drawn out, but Edie Falco is such a fantastic actress that I could watch that stuff for hours because of her acting ability. The thing with Vito shocked me, I was sitting there saying, "Oh my God" over and over. There is a real life analog to him, though. The Sopranos is supposedly based on the DeCavalcante(sp) crime family in NJ, and one of their members was whacked for being gay. In fact, one of them is on trial now, and when asked what happens to gay mobsters, he replied, "They die." Now Carmine & Johnny Sack are at war, and despite Tony's beat efforts to remain neutral he's right in the middle of it beacuse of Tony B. I got a good laugh from the 'Johnny Peeps' headstone, and also Paulie Walnuts doing an about-face when he finds out the kid is Meadow's boyfriend. Carmela's line to Meadow was a classic: "You've got options:I've got a lawyer"
  11. Mackey Sasser went from backup catcher on the Mets to master hacker, who knew?
  12. Bring umbrellas
  13. Clemens is an amazing specimen, he's reknowned for his punishing workouts. He has a good shot to vault into the top ten in career wins this year, and he'll pass Carlton for #2 in lifetime strikeouts soon- and he's still throwing 90+!
  14. The suggestion to start with the original album, particularly since you're not familiar it, sounds like a good way to start IMHO. If you have a multi-disc player, by all means, load it up and go random-there are gems throughout the set. I started with disc one and played it a bunch of times, then moved on disc by disc, playing anything that struck me repeatedly. I carried the set in my bag for three weeks, listening on a discman while riding the subways back and forth to work, then catching some at home every evening. it is a set that definitely rewards repeated listening, and McLaughlin ROCKS!
  15. My thoughts & prayers go out to you.
  16. Garth, With the five man rotation it's almost impossible to win 30 games anymore. A starter will only get about 32/33 starts a year, and so he needs incredible luck, a fantastic bullpen, maybe a few lucky relief appearances and some great health, not to mention great run support. In 1968 McClain won some games because he pitched deep into games and had a chance if the team came back to get a win. it also helped that he probably started 40 games that year.
  17. The estimates are over 3000 dead. What devastation, the after picture has so much of the before picture wiped out. scary stuff.
  18. I was in Toys'r'us one day with my son when he was nine(he's twelve now), and they have this absurd security thing where you pay and then someone checks your bag to see if there's anything else you may have stolen or a crooked employee slipped into your bag. So we had bought one item, and there were people ahead of us, we were in a hurry, so I waved my receipt VERY CLEARLY so that this punk could see it AND showed him the bag. We were already out of the store and on the way to the parking lot when this punk comes out of the store and starts CURSING at me in front of my son. Well, I freaked out and marched back into the store and got a hold of a manager and explained what happened. He apologized and said "He doesn't work here anymore."
  19. didn't Nimoy also do a version(horrible) of 'Proud Mary'? Somewhere in the deep recesses of repressed horrors I seem to recall that.
  20. Noj. That Gil Evans doing Hendrix was really cool if you heard it when it came out in the 70s. Unfortunately, with the cheesy synth work and the somewhat overblown arrangements(but cool for that time), it just sounds dated now.
  21. Donovan also did 'Catch the Wind', which was a very good song IMHO.
  22. Joe Beck did some nice stuff with Joe Farrell in a quartet with Herb Bushler on electric bass & Jimmy Madison on drums. They did at least two albums on CTI in the mid-70s. They still haven't been released on cd yet(I still have hope, though...)
  23. That's the sickening part, there will be more of this mindless, soulless pablum foisted on a populace already overwhelmed with waves of empty music.UGH!!!!!!
  24. Drink some Wild Turkey(That's some pretty powerful stuff), crank up some Sly & the Family Stone followed by Hendrix, then slip into Sidewinder or similar souljazz, and FEEL THE GROOVE. It won't make your problems go away, but you'll at least feel better and maybe that will help you through this ordeal. Work can really be awful sometimes, I know well. Hang in there, Rainy Day.
  25. Good luck, Johnny E! (Insert favorite drummer icon here)
