  1. I think that's it. What's important (not necessarily what's dangerous) is whatever happens to be directly in front of our noses. It's "relative" importance in the grand scheme of things is lost. We're programed that way. Or so say the behavioral scientists.
  2. I still find it astonishing (but not really) that anyone gives a rat's ass about any of this. I was talking to someone tonight who relayed the following theory: A couple of behavioral scientist-type guys did a study that showed the portion of the human brain that actually focuses on long-term problems is very small, and not easily stimulated. But the part of the brain that focuses on immediate problems is very large, and very easily stimulated. This is a result of all the running away from wild beasts we did back in the day, while still evolving. (Immediate problem = avoid getting eaten by wild beast. Long term problem = none.) So, if you tell someone today that there's a 99% chance of a nuclear attack sometime in the next 10 years, they say, "Eh, whatever." But if you point out a garden snake in the yard, they freak out. And this is basically why people get into a lather over Michael Jackson, sobbing and weeping and OMG, OMG, (the garden snake), but don't really worry too much about something like health care, to pick a random long-term problem. (In the HO of at least two anonymous behavioral scientists out there somewhere).
  3. Ordered both ... darn you people anyways.
  4. ESPN even had some coverage. I guess because they now have a studio across the street from Staples?
  5. The ME is saying it's all but certain that it will be ruled a murder-suicide once ballistic tests come back on the gun. There is some hesitation from investigators on that because there doesn't seem to be an obvious motive, they say. The two got alone well by all accounts, according to the investigation. And no history of violence between them, apparently.
  6. The term "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" seems apt. I go with AAA.
  7. I bet Dan's involved in some steroid trial.
  8. I got called a few years ago. Once seated among the larger group, they would take small groups out of the room for questioning. They got their jury before my name was called, so that was it. Just sat around in a large room for half the day. Someone did come out at one point to take some questions. It seemed to me at the time for some reason that some people who were summoned simply didn't show up. They weren't present when names were called, or something like that. So I asked, "What happens if you simply don't show up?" Looking slightly nonplussed, the woman taking the quesitons responded that the judge "could" fine you or even hold you in contempt and order jail time, but that either option was unlikely. I surmised from this that people who had a certain degree of wealth might simply blow it off and pay the fine, should one be levied. The cost of doing business. Maybe even write it off on their taxes.
  9. I went with No. 4, mainly because it's the largest. But really, because it is about the band, and you guys just look cool in that one superimposed on the logo. If the design had a ".org" in small lettering underneath "Organissimo," that might be even better. Or maybe on the back -- just ".org" But anyone who buys a T-shirt will probably google the band anyways and one way or another find out what they need to.
  10. They were kicking around the Nomar reception at Fenway on First Take today. Somewhat predictably, the consensus seemed to be that the fans were thanking him for leaving and taking the Ruth curse with him. ... and that BoSox fans are going soft ... Looked like a nice reception. Makes you wonder how Manny, who actually helped win them a couple of titles, would be received. Fans sure seem to love him everywhere else he goes.
  11. It's always a risk.
  12. Happy birthday. Eat some cake.
  13. The Windy City maybe?
  14. Target CDs explanation From the description provided, it seems you might very well find target cds in a tar-jay clearance bin.
  15. Yeah, I figured they probably would not be kind to 78s that weren't manufactured contemporaneously. Still, I'd love to hear what one of these sounds like.
  16. i wonder if they go out for a few beers afterward?
  17. Anybody have any interest in, experience with, opinions on, these babies? I don't have a turntable, let alone any 78s. But the thought of cranking up one of these (or a less expensive version) does hold some intrigue. Some are quite large, judging from the photos.
  18. The 100 dog barrier will fall when someone eats 1 dawg per 6 seconds. IMO
  19. IMO The 100 dog barrier will be broken one day. IMO
  20. IMO I have no opinion on the drugs and alcohol angle. IMO
  21. (I always assumed it was the time signature for some Braxton piece)
  22. The banging doesn't seem to phase my critters either. I've had a few that it did though.
  23. Very sad. He was killed with a woman who wasn't his wife, in a condo he owned with a friend, which may mean nothing. The circumstances may be completely innocent. But being as they were killed in what appears to be almost execution style, if I were the cops I'd pursue the theory that the circumstances were not innocent until I was proved wrong. Interesting that the friend who discovered their bodies says he initially walked past them into the kitchen, then re-emerged to find they had been shot and killed. That doesn't sound quite right to me.
