I've just been playing Monk and the Jazz Messengers, that takes some beating.

The DIW lps are well worth seeking out, some very nice stuff. Hal Wilner's interpretations are for the most part very listenable. I'm not positive but I think I recall a single cd reissue of the material but think it may have been edited slightly.

Sad news indeed. Fortunately I did get to see him play.

I love this album. I'm not sure if it was my introduction to Mingus back in the 50s but it could well have been. It was certainly my introduction to Bill Evans, Danny Richmond and the rest. What a band, everything seems right, arrangements , soloists and not a dull moment. A treasure. No wonder my youthful ears got entranced by Jazz.

I've always liked 'Junior' on Verve. Dates from his time with Dizzy.

I have the Fresh Sound cd. Contains both albums. The Concerto Grosso sounds fine. The other tracks are much less interesting, the sound is puzzling too, sounds like it's running slightly slow. Worth getting for the Grosso especially if you like Mulligan and Brookmeyer, in fact it sounds like a Mulligan date in places.

Absolutely. Have it on Japanese vinyl. Probably my favourite Konitz album. I love 'People Will Say We're In Love', almost perfect.

I'm in agreement too. A New Perspective is hard to beat. Has Hank as a bonus.

Pick up the free monthly Jazz In London leaflet. It's available from places like Rays. This will tell you what's on at clubs and pubs in and around London. There's some pretty good music to be heard. You can download the information from jazzinlondon.net

Overall a very nice set. Previously out on Kaz. Someone with more knowledge than me may be able to confirm that one of the tracks is edited on the cd, complete on the vinyl.
