    Roy Babbington

I've heard Dave Green and Andy Cleyndert recently. Both fine swinging players. Not sure what Jeff Clyne is up tp these days but I understand he's still active. But Babbington's playing with the Eales trio was something else. Definitely had the wow factor.
  2. Have a very happy birthday
  3. I got a lot of the Kings from Mole too. Lovely sound and great pressings. But I didn't turn my nose up at the 'Rainbow' pressings which I didn't find to bad sonically. If I remember correctly the Rainbow issues were released in advance of the Kings.
  4. Not to be missed. The Byrd album introduced me to hard bop and Mobley back in the 50s. I've been hooked ever since.
  5. Dmitry is right about the Cook book imo. A very disapponting read. Very little new.
  6. Happy birthday Connisseur

    Roy Babbington

I've had the pleasure hearing Roy play on two occasions in the last few months. A veteran of Nucleus and Soft Machine he is on top form now as part of the Geoff Eales Trio, playing in the tradition of the great Bill Evans bass players. Great technique, listener, soloist, his interplay with the pianist is brilliant. I don't know when I've enjoyed a bass player more. If any UK board members can get to a Geoff Eales gig on his current then it's worth it just for Babbington, but I don't want to detract from drummer Mark Fletcher who makes a lovely noise and pianist Eales. If you've caught the band what did you think?

    Albert Ayler

    Welcome back Gary
  9. Just received the Messengers and Slide Hampton. Got the former to tidy up the collection because of the piecemeal reissue of the material. Not heard Hampton's Drum Suite before. After the first couple of playings I'll admit to being a trifle disappointed.
  10. Birthday greetings
  11. Two f'ups. First when I was much younger and poorer when record buying was an something that didn't happen too often Dave Brubeck's Jazz goes to Junior College slipped out of the sleeve, landed on a stone step and a chunk bite size chunk was knocked out of it. I don't think this album has had a US or Euro reissue to date. More recently I was cleaning a vinyl copy of Mobley's Straight No Filter (it had got a little mould growth through being stored in the cellar -bad move) when my hand slipped and I now have a record with two finger mark gouges across the opening track.
  12. I do find myself referring to the PG guide less these days. But as Amazon are giving a reasonable discount I'll go for it.
  13. I've always been happy with Caiman. But then I usually order fairly new releases, taking advantage of their modest pricing and reasonable international shipping charges.
  14. Sadly I've not kept up with all of the late Malachi Thompson's Delmark releases but the three or four I've heard have all been uniformly excellent and any could have made my choice of aotw. This one is chock full of excellent solos from Thompson and fine solos from most of the rest of the band. The addition of guests, Zane Massey and Ari Brown as well as Lester Bowie (Thompson was a member of Bowies Brass Fantasy) adds some of variety. Illness during the last few years of his life didn't dim his playing. If you don't have this particuar cd then let's hear about any other.

    Marion Brown

Sorry, but what does this refer to? The choicest items in the Brown discography
  16. The Myra Melford disc is terrific.
  17. I'd agre that the Steve White Nocturne material is far from essential, but I quite like it. White has a light Lesterish sound and the backing group with Jimmy Rowles, Harry babasin and Roy Harte swings along nicely. Imo if you are interested in west coast jazz and the Nocturne label these are worthy of a listen.

    The first ESP and Jubalee.
  19. Yeah definitely hi-jacked. Don't know how they got in. Just waiting for ebay to restore the account but otherwise no real harm done. The moral is not to be too complacent and change my password regularly.
  20. Any one else had any unauthorised sales on their ebay? Looked at my ebay yesterday to find I was selling a coffee machine! A 24 hour listing with the instruction don't bid on the item or pay through ebay but contact an email address. Clearly a scam of sorst and I'd guess that no goods will be delivered. I want like being involved with things like this.
  21. Belated Birthday greetings Brownie.
  22. Happy Birthday Chris ps and I still like Phoenix.
  23. The Gift is, imo, a rather minor entry in the Savoy catalogue. It's interesting to hear Charles on vibes but I can't say the cd does very much for me. As stated above, bring on the Baron's.
  24. I was just playing this the other day. Certainly one I'd overlooked. It could easily become my favourite Woody Shaw album. Definitely a five star album.
