  1. How 'bout "Hawes by a 'fro"? I was going to say by a 'nose' but that wasn't quite enough. Not sure what a 'fro' is!
  2. Have a very happy birthday.
  3. Let me join in the greetings. I happy to own up to enjoying Fred too, a nice quartet cd on Hinote and some nice band discs on Minor Music and Antilles. Some interesting sidemen too like Hugh Ragin, Geri Allen, Robin Eubanks, Bill Stewart etc. Maybe not essential but happy, solid good listening music.
  4. I rarely look at the booklets, I usually need something in the music to spur me to get them out.
  5. Don't know, but I'm keeping mine, unless Chuck comes up with an expanded cd.
  6. Have a very happy birthday Guy

    Jimmy Giuffre

I'm not a sucker for the clarinet but The Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet was one of my first jazz experiences and I've loved Giuffre ever since. The Mosaic set has the best stuff imo but there's a lot more, especially his arranging for McKusick and others during the mid 50s. Giuffre's name as arranger usually guarantees fine music.
  8. Nice little video. I think MG is correct. There was certainly one or maybe even two 'Great Guitars' segments in th Jazz Expo concert series. I can't recall if I saw this one or not. I only disposed of a Jazz Expo programme recently. A shame in the circumstances.
  9. I had one of these from the off. Definitely Fontana, black and silver label and thick board jacket. Sleeve note by Benny Green if memory serves.

    William Parker

Try 'Luc's Lantern' to sample the minimalist end of the Parker spectrum. An absorbing piano trio.
  11. Can't say I'm too thrilled by the presence of a vocalist.
  12. A very unpleasant sound.
  13. Congratulations Chuck.
  14. Happy Birthday Stefan
  15. Don't know about Japan but I've had the US vinyl and cd.
  16. Mike's just about said it all, I never tire of listening to the dates from this time featuring the musicians Mke quotes. It still sounds so fresh 50 years on. And it's another album featured in the small 1975 volume, 'Modern Jazz 1945-70 The Essential Records'. Listening on Japanese vinyl by he way.
  17. I thought I should give this one a spin as it's started a couple of threads. No reason to change my opinion, Flanagan doesn't seem to involved though the ballads are pretty enough but very little seems to happen. Maybe it's the material. A better place to hear Flanagan playing some show tunes is the Savoy quartet date with Wilbur Harden where they play the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein.

    Clifford Brown

It's fifty years ago today that we lost Brownie. To remember and celebrate Brownie's life and contribution the Portsmouth Jazz Society have commisiond tenor player Bobby Wellins and trumpeter Gary Kavanagh to put together a group to play some of Brownie's compositions, many of which seem undervalued or underplayed imo. The performance is tonight and we are looking forward to a special evening.
  19. Thanks CT. Unfortunately I don't have an original. Mine has the red (orange) cornet label but no mention of Polydor.
  20. Exactly what Sidewinder said.
  21. These are the ones from French Vogue? If so definitely recommended.
  22. Lovely music. One of the great partnerships in jazz? I have the Mosaic so I had the pleasure of playing discs one and two today. Not a wasted note. Desmond is just just incredible, but often it's Hall who's understated playing catches my ear, so many surprises from him along the way. Did he ever play better than here? I should add I'm not a great bossa fan but these are the guys to play it.
