That's about right, it's not amazing. I bought the lp when it was first released on the strength of Mance's playing with Gillespie. I sold the record some time later but came to regret it.. I was happy find a Japanese cd a few years back and wouldn't be without it maybe for solely nostalgic reasons. That said I have nothing else by Mance so he doesn't speak much to me either.
Count me in as a big Savoy fan. The doubles are excellent, nice pressings, intelligent notes and well produced. The music too had its own special quality.
This one got me this week
Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen. From David Murray's Speaking In Tongues (Justin Time). Solos by Murray, a typically fine one from Hugh Ragin and sung by Fontella Bass.
Aka Soul Groove. A pretty lacklustre session. Not helped by UK Polydors flat sounding pressing.
They were mid-price (21/- IIRC). Thin card covers, clarifoil on the front, plain white backs, that became grubby in no time.
Donald Byrd; Byrd In Paris, Volume 1. French Polydor 1987 reissue.
Bobby Jasper ,Walter Davis Jr, Doug Watkins and Art Taylor.
Now on to Volume 2
I'd forgotten how nice these are.
Two names stick out - John Coltrane and Gerry Mulligan. I didn't know about the Coltrane gig until the day after it happened. I don't know how I came to miss Mulligan.
