The label is still active, though, run by Steve Holtje. I guess it's a way to raise money for other projects, licensing things out like that, but I don't understand pushing the same product over and over and over. Free jazz was supposed to be immune to that! Hehe.

Great music; wish they'd do something about the cover art. I find it odd that ESP are licensing out titles they recently re-pressed themselves, but whatever. It's also kinda weird that right now we have three new reissues of Porto Novo kicking around: this one, the Japanese CD, and a US vinyl reissue for Record Store Day. It's a great record, one of my favorites, but talk about a diffuse licensing model...

Memorial Day Meets Pandemic
clifford_thornton replied to Justin V's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
yeah, our upstairs neighbors and my wife and I had dinner in the backyard, just the four of us, on Memorial Day. But that's it. We've all been locked down and hardly go anywhere, so it was pretty safe. Thankfully new infections/hospitalizations are way, way down in NYC and we are hoping that it'll stay that way for a while. I would say masks are about 50%. Clusters tend to be around 5-6 people max in the parks; I wish more would wear masks, but... it's nothing like Lake of the Ozarks or anything, either. People do spread out. They could do more, but it's not outrageous. I think younger people here are pretty much steering clear of their aged parents/grandparents. I dunno, I'm cautiously optimistic but there are always those people who don't heed state and local orders, even around NY. I do worry about tourists from other areas of the country bringing the virus back to the city, which is kinda why I hope that most of the attractions stay closed throughout the summer. -
Sonny/Sunny Morgan percussionist (have seen it spelled both ways).

Right, was just referring to Thurston's list. Would love to hear that solo cassette! Very rare indeed. Only Marion Brown original I've never been able to track down a copy of is Le Temps Fou. Certainly my white whale. -

cosign on the Jothan Callins as well, very nice album. Kloss might not be as well known today, but Prestige was certainly pushing him as a "young lion" back in the 1960s. Excellent player. -
What vinyl are you spinning right now??
clifford_thornton replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Just the Miles; only WR album I have is Live in Tokyo. Also the first Return To Forever on German ECM... and the Coryell stuff. And Prime Time, as well as a lot of European and Japanese jazz-rock I don't see represented here... -
Damn, RIP.

Have this Blue Parrot LP as well, it's quite stunning.

looks like the IASW set is gone, unless they're expecting to get more. Was waiting to see how the OTC box turned out before plunging. Oh well! -
I've never owned nor heard those Blackwell CDs, will have to seek 'em out.

right. The Pullen/Graves duos should be out on CD pretty soon I think -- they're receiving a legitimate reissue treatment. I think the only ones that never made it to a proper CD reissue at this point are the Colbeck, Watts, and Marion Brown (oddly). The Colbeck was supposed to come out some years ago but that reissue program collapsed; Concord is dithering with the Savoy catalog and I don't know whether anyone has tried licensing the Watts recently (I know there were attempts years ago). -

Excellent, intense French saxophonist. The trio with Thelin and Favre is good and he's on Portal's excellent Splendid Yzlment (CBS), but the group Armonicord and its LP "Esprits de Sel" is really where he shines. That record is wonderful, and heavy as all get-out. https://www.discogs.com/Armonicord-Esprits-De-Sel/release/1464440 -

same, SY are one of my favorite bands of all time. I did really enjoy the Spirit Counsel concert last year w/ Deb Googe, James Sedwards, and Steve Shelley. Great music, full of subtlety. -

Digging up an old thread sure brings up a lot of memories; I wish I was a little less of a turkey posting on here 14 years ago, but whatever. Thurston's improvising has either grown on me or he's gotten better, quieter, taken more time -- something like that. I've had all the stuff he mentions on that list for many years, and all of it is deserving of mention. The thing is, he wrote that shit in 1995 so some things like the first Michel Portal record on Pathé or Giorgio Gaslini's Nuovi Sentimenti or Takagi Mototeru's 2 to 10 Saxophone Adventure (find that one and send it to me) probably weren't yet on his radar. There's always stuff to learn about. Jouck Minor is a fabulous player. Jon Dale's list is pretty good. I don't do lists anymore because every fuckin' day I hear something I haven't heard before, even in the albums I already own. Ain't that beautiful? I miss clem. -
Yeah, Strata-East handled distribution but the artists had to put up finished recordings & production costs, and controlled everything down to the look of the record jacket. So it really would have been her album.

Boscoe is great, dunno if that's still in print.

BYG was operated by Fernand Boruso Jean-Luc Young, and Jean Georgakarokos, and also funded and promoted the Actuel festival of new music in Amougies, Belgium, were connected to the Actuel magazine founded by Claude Delcloo (later run by J-F Bizot) and Current magazine, which was of a more political flavor. Pretty sure the BYG folks stepped out of the publishing biz soon after 1970. Georgakarakos remained involved in music, most notably operating Celluloid (Material, Billy Bang, Golden Palominos, et al.). They were definitely connected to filmmakers and others in French underground media in the 60s and beyond. I seem to recall that Mobley was more part of that scene than recordings would outlay, and Shepp and Philly Joe Jones would probably have been the connection.

oof. Too soon in my book, at least in the US. Still hunkered down over on my end.
