  1. Sad news. He was a really interesting character. https://www.tagesspiegel.de/kultur/praegende-figur-des-deutschen-jazz-pianist-wolfgang-dauner-ist-tot/25422042.html
  2. thanks! I actually didn't get much listening in yesterday, but the night prior was spent with Ben Young in an undisclosed location listening to all manner of tapes...
  3. that's too bad about paul. Shows, I guess, that I haven't checked in too much this year. Dolan and I pretty much had a constant beef but at the end of the day it's the internet and I don't really know the guy, so... it is easy enough to hide someone on here that you don't like to interact with (or be tempted to interact with).
  4. Got the LP set through a helpful UK board agent who saved me a bit on shipping. Sorry to hear that others had major issues in this regard! Sound so far is superb; my only quibble is the printed 'flipbacks' on the LP sleeves, probably shoulda just left 'em off. But whatever. Definite upgrade on Japanese issues for sure.
  5. Dunno why you need to buy a CD-R boot of the Dusko when the Japanese Enja reissue from a few years ago is still available on Discogs as new stock... I'd try sources other than Amazon wherever possible.
  6. Webster Young -- For Lady -- (Prestige Victor JP)
  7. Alex Foster/John Lewis -- Transaxdrum -- (Finite, US)
  8. all gone, sorry to say -- missed this!
  9. Masayuki Takayanagi New Direction Unit -- Eclipse -- (Iskra, Craftman reissue of limited JP orig)
  10. https://www.discogs.com/artist/292608-Milton-Suggs the Ari Brown and Byron Morris/Unity albums are also really good.
  11. Milton Suggs is the father of a popular jazz singer by the same name. Both Farrah LPs on Strata-East are really good. I haven't heard the one on RA (drummer Ron Rashaan's label).
  12. that's what I understand the connection was, but would be interested to hear otherwise. Lotta people with a lot of stories; sometimes they converge and sometimes quite the opposite! Babi and Alabama/Alamama Feeling are amazing records, but very different from what Howard was up to.
  13. come to think of it, I would like to get back a few hardcore and related 12"s. San Diego stuff mostly -- had some nice albums on Gravity by Clikatat Ikatowi, Antioch Arrow, Heroin, etc.
  14. Really wish I'd kept some of my spacier indie rock records like Labradford, Bedhead, Bowery Electric... purged about 700 records before moving to NYC and those are the only ones I miss.
  15. yeah, Bruno was hanging at the 212 Artists Colony up in Woodstock, which is how he got hooked up with Noah Howard, Earl Cross, Tintweiss, et al..
  16. Black Ark is brilliant. Live at the Village Vanguard (with Frank Lowe, Bob Bruno, Earl Freeman, and Rashied Ali) is awesome too. I have all of the LPs save Traffic (which didn't turn me on when I heard it), and wouldn't want to be without a single one of them. Heard a reel from Steve Tintweiss' archives, a large 'free' ensemble recorded in the Black Ark era, and Howard's alto just shown through like gold (this is what Kent Carter said about Lacy's soprano in those freer groups). Absolutely wonderful player and seemingly a very kind man.
  17. Let me know how it goes. I want that Peter Riley book.
  18. I just learned that German trumpeter, bassist, visual artist, and composer Herbert Joos passed on Dec. 7. Really liked his work.
  19. Alvin Fielder Bill Folwell Cleve Pozar
  20. the Polwechsel records are sweet. Wish I still had them.
  21. Superior Viaduct is legit but they only sometimes license from the artists themselves; most of the time they work with larger labels and pay up for back catalog licenses (Universal, BMG, etc.) and go from a digital master. 4 Men With Beards was connected to Runt (Abraxas/Get Back) and somewhat grey market.
  22. It was at least $150 when I reserved mine, which was in the summer.
