  1. And it's Kenny Drew, not Kelly Drew.
  2. now: Horace Tapscott -- The Giant Is Awakened -- (Flying Dutchman)
  3. Gil Evans -- Big Stuff -- (New Jazz deep-groove pressing) Lacy is fantastic on "Just One Of Those Things." Maybe not fully-formed, but getting there.
  4. The Lines -- Ultramarine -- (Red, UK orig)
  5. Bummer -- always loved reading her thoughts. Safe travels, Ms. B.
  6. Ah -- still looking for a vinyl copy of that one! Now: Jazz Contemporaries -- Reasons In Tonality -- (Strata-East, US)
  7. yeah, that Time LP is great. Bought it years ago for precisely this reason.
  8. Wow. Was just talking with Alvin Fielder about Jack. Alvin recalls playing in Jack's piano trio in Chicago in the 1960s.
  9. Can't wait! Congrats, Allen.
  10. Great one. Now, Phill Musra -- The Creator Spaces -- (Intex, US)
  11. Hmm. The In Situ CD from the early 90s had an alternate take or two as well.
  12. whole LP is on YouTube if you want to give it a listen. It's superb. I'd like to know if the release will still include previously unissued material, as I need to hear that stuff!
  13. Ed Askew -- s/t -- (ESP, US) one of my favorite ESPs.
  14. the head injury aspect I did not know before. Jeez. "the late Lee Morgan" story sounds familiar.
  15. same. I had no idea how strung out and near-death Lee Morgan was before he met Helen.
  16. I don't think I would listen to them on record now, but they're still good.
  17. Saw them semi-recently in New York with an improvising ensemble joining them onstage for two sets -- Roswell Rudd, Mary Halvorson, Taylor Ho Bynum, Vincent Chancey, Daniel Carter, etc. -- and it was superb. Still hard to imagine buying one of their records again but watching them disassemble their own songs, sometimes unsuccessfully, gave me a clearer idea of what they are capable of. yeah, the early records are pretty different -- basically sound like The Clean, or any page out of the Dunedin scene.
  18. Erica Pomerance -- You Used To Think -- (ESP, orig US) quite fond of this one
  19. ^^^ still need to grab that LP one of these days...
  20. Bummer. She was/is something.
