I know this is a little bit of short notice, but perhaps some of you local to the Hudson Valley will be interested in a sort of rangy singer-songwriter evening of music. What: Tara Jane O'Neil; Little Mazarn; The Local Third When: September 11 @ Tubby's Kingston, show at 8 $20 doors/$15 advance I wanted to let you know about a wonderful concert coming up on September 11, 2024 at Tubby's in Kingston, NY with Tara Jane O'Neil, Little Mazarn, and "The Local Third" who are playing the music of Ida, dressed up to look like Ida, and probably smell a bit like Ida (but aren't exactly performing AS Ida). TJO has been a big part of my musical life/interests since I was a teenager trying to get accustomed to life & beauty & darkness and all that exists in the world. She was the bassist and a principal songwriter/vocalist in Rodan, who were huge for me (their sole proper LP, Rusty, celebrated its 30th anniversary this year), and later founded The Sonora Pine, Retsin (who joined forces with Ida), and has recorded numerous solo LPs of spindly, rich songcraft and improvisation. She played Tubby's a couple of years ago with drummer/vocalist Ryan Sawyer and it was a blast. Little Mazarn are from Austin and consist of Lindsey Verrill (ex-Weird Weeds) and Jeff Johnston and sometimes others. Lindsey has that kind of "lonesome train-whistle voice" which cuts through everything. It's music that feels both homespun and otherworldly. "The Local Third" will be playing music like this legendary album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xaVblDntwU Tix here: TJO/LM/TLT

great cover photo b/w more stuff to buy 😬

Ha, yeah, when you said "hat" that's where my mind went, though I am probably not as familiar with his work as I should be.

Pat Thomas?

Way too young; I gather that he had been ill for some time. RIP.

Anthony Braxton and the influence of Eric Dolphy
clifford_thornton replied to Rabshakeh's topic in Artists
Oh yeah, the connection goes without saying. When I interviewed & spent time with Braxton years ago, "Eric" did come up from Mr. Braxton, so it was definitely acknowledged. -
Wow, what a loss. Condolences to those who knew him. RIP.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

all true, and also the rights to do such a set would be a quagmire. Other than the two Pathé/Nessa titles, everything is owned by Charly/BYG, Pierre Berjot (Musidisc - America, Galloway, Carson), and DA Music/Alan Bates (Freedom-Polydor). -
file a PayPal claim I guess?

have this album buried in my bandcamp, I haven't listened to it a whole lot but it's a good session. too much stuff that I only have digitally gets lost in the, er, shuffle.

excellent BFT. I'll listen through again and see if I get any others that haven't already been mentioned.

Both excellent choices. -
Cover is a bit worn for $200 IMO but it's not a terrible price. I have seen Liberty-era LPs with W63rd labels from time to time. More frequently NY USA labels, however, even on 1500/early 4000 series titles.

the vocals on #14 are somewhere between Jacqui McShee and Norma Winstone. I like it.
-
pianist on #12 reminds me of Keith Tippett.
-
yeah, I prefer some of Beckett's earlier recordings to this one but on today's listen was enjoying it a lot. #11 I like a lot, feels familiar but I can't quite get it.
-
#7 is Harry Beckett, recognize that sound anywhere. Ray Russell on guitar, it sounds like. "Glowing" from Joy Unlimited, right? Haven't dug this one out in ages.
-
Is it wrong to like track #3? I don't know who it is, could be a lot of contemporary things, but I like it. recognize #4 but cannot place it. they cut that track too short IMO!
-
I agree with this, pretty much -- my experiences seeing him in concert far exceed the recordings.

Obscure or Underrated Bassists
clifford_thornton replied to Stevie Mclean's topic in Miscellaneous Music
was Maxine Gregg (later Gordon) married to Jack at one point, or were they siblings? I could never parse that. She played cello with early editions of the Galaxie Dream Band before being with Woody Shaw and, later, Dexter, and then we know a bit of the history afterwards... -
Last art exhibition you visited?

he's great. Saw an exhibition of his work at MassMOCA one year, and also saw him perform solo with Cooper-Moore opening (Whitney Breuer space, at least 10 years ago now). -
yeah, I have encountered that on Bandcamp before and never trust it to be true. I don't believe I've ever gotten a physical product from a Bandcamp page within two weeks.
