  1. This would have been my only reference point. Pekar is also a solid critic. This is great but is there a large print edition? I can't see all the detail because of how they've uploaded the images.
  2. Thanks for posting that.
  3. 1952 Monk sides on BN, as well as material issued on The Modern Jazz Giants.
  4. Really interesting question. I hope more people chime in. And welcome to the board, Tom Cat.
  5. Well, this is a 1969 LP set. But yeah, they are apparently still in business.
  6. Ben owns copies the masters to the Tony Oxley RCA-Victor LP, Ichnos. I have heard that he plans to do a deluxe vinyl reissue of that as well. Hopefully the Cecil piece comes out - I have a number earmarked and won't have to pay until it's actually shipped. Wonder when that will be?
  7. Agreed, except the swing tune in the middle of side two sounds out of place. The rest of the album is great, though. Picked that up for $4 recently on Jeff's recommendation. A fine LP. Now spinning the Xenakis boxed set on Erato.
  8. Yeah, there will surely be another Bixieland.
  9. I think he would have lessened the amount of performing and recording, instead nurturing younger musicians and running a performance space or putting his weight behind some sort of guild or collective.
  10. $12 shipped gets the remaining three discs.
  11. I would enjoy hearing Rudd and Rollins together, especially circa the mid 1960s.
  12. Austin doesn't even have a decent classic rock station. It's annoying.
  13. I wouldn't say it's not worth checking out, at least. It grew on me. Reviewed it for AAJ if anyone's interested.
  14. I talked to another label about that and from their perspective it wasn't going to be affordable/profitable. Others here might know more specifics, but I would be surprised given Milford's dissatisfaction with ESP "then" that he'd want his music on that label "now." The music itself is very good but not very well recorded (not that that's stopped anybody).
  15. They ARE in the reissue game. Stollman is at the helm. I gripe but then again it's great to see this stuff out and getting decent distribution/press, and the ZYX licensed issues, Calibre/Get Back "licensed boots," etc. are long OOP anyway. Still, uncovering some of the archived material in a creative way would be nice. If repackaging is their MO, I'd like to see something like a "College Tour" boxed set with music from Ran Blake, Patty Waters, Burton Greene and Sun Ra. As far as new material, the best thing they've done IMO is the Talibam! CD.
  16. Just got my copy from Pedro - looking forward to a spin as well!
  17. I'm going to hire chewy as my record scout. Original UK?
  18. I like it. Masterpiece - no, but enjoyable and considering the paucity of Lasha's work on CD... Seems like ESP could have just plopped a single disc of more "College Tour" Ra out there and people would have happily bought it. Contrary to what is espoused in liner notes, the "Sgt. Pepper's of jazz" it is not.
  19. One of my favorite records ever. Original vinyl was on Bija, ESP licensed the tapes way back when though it didn't actually appear on ESP until the CD era. Strange, especially when the Ra Nothing Is... CD w/ extra tracks is still in print as a single. They just keep re-ordering the tracks.
  20. I don't even know that one, would like to. The Howard came to mind because it is another ESP-Disk from the same era. Cool record from '63 with Don Cherry, Clifford Jordan, Charles Moffett et al. Very scarce custom-label thing that doesn't circulate much. That Judson Hall date is certainly the better of the two Howard ESPs though ultimately his non-ESP sides (Sun, Altsax, etc.) are a bit stronger IMHO. & if ESP reissues the Marzette, hopefully they get the track order right this time. Calibre and ZYX both fucked it up.
  21. With a cover shot by our own brownie!
  22. Tapscott - Flight 17
  23. Or the Lasha/Simmons session "It Is Revealed."
