I've been buying records from Birka Jazz since they started as an online shop. It's a good place to go for Scandinavian stuff at reasonable prices. Their grading is solid, and the one mistake I encountered, they sent me another copy and told me to keep the defective one. No record shops do that in the States!

I just got the Von from Nessa - too late to make my "list" but it's an unbelievable corker. Considering that in 2002 I arrived late to the concert heavily jetlagged and can only remember its greatness through an indistinct fog, this document is very helpful. The version of "Summertime" is un-fucking-believable. Thanks to Nessa for keeping the flame alive!

Yes, my friend Andrey interviewed him for All About Jazz while he was in hospice. Fine, fine player with Marion Brown, Gunter Hampel, Sunny Murray and Steve Lacy. Didn't get to see him with Charlie Persip. RIP - he will be missed.

I'm wondering, quickly, whether the Melvin Smith (wiry, noisy guitar style) who played with Charles Tyler, Steve Reid et al. is the same "Little Melvin" who cut some blues & R&B material for RCA, among others, in the 50s and 60s. AMG points to them being the same person but I find that highly suspect. Thanks.
