Haha, well, you got me on festive socks and thick glasses, but the rest of it doesn't track. Anchor Steam is good. It's been decades since I've had it, though -- the proliferation of microbrews and faux microbrews kind of pushed it out of rotation and their distribution took a hit in the last 15 years as well. You'd think Sapporo would've fixed that but they didn't. Also, I have read that the employees put in a competitive bid to buy it out from Sapporo but I'm not sure if that will work out. Hopefully.

I only have the Twardzik/Freeman split, but I love his playing & tunes on there. Sublime stuff. I've perhaps said this elsewhere but working with Shipp on this book and getting to experience his playing in so many contexts has gotten me to listen to the piano in a very different way, think about harmonies differently (as a non-musician), etc.. and Twardzik hits me very hard now, whereas I just did not catch all the subtleties (and some of the not-subtle parts) before.

I think around a hundred, maybe more, were done with hand painted covers, and another few hundred or so with the gold paste-on slick (which is the version I have). There was only one pressing of the vinyl, probably no more than 500. I would expect this copy to land around $10K. Too much, in my opinion, but people with money like to buy things.

yeah, tried it on my 30 year old DVD player (which plays everything else) and my 2-year-old Subaru CD player. It could be a defective disc, I'm not sure.

I guess I may just have to listen to it online, as my trusty but very old CD player seems fine with every other aluminum disc I own. What a pain in the ass.

my SHM is getting this too. I've never dealt with CDJapan and am wondering how easy returns are. to me it looks like a blank CD but this is also the first SHM I've ever owned.

yes, I imagine the sound is pretty accurate in terms of experiencing the live balance -- of course, nothing can really put you "there" unless you were there, but it's probably close. Elvin was loud and Dolphy as far as I know hadn't really played with him until working with Coltrane, so was probably still adjusting. Alderson's engineering is interesting -- to me it seems much more documentarian than stereophilic, and I appreciate that while knowing that for some settings it isn't ideal. But I like what he did on ESP and Prestige (and Reprise -- he was Tom Rapp's go-to recordist, from what I understand).

Lemuel Marc, Chris Williams, and Joe Moffett are three excellent young/younger trumpeters I don't see mentioned a lot. Knuffke and Bynum are great but Kirk is probably my age (mid-40s) and Bynum is in his 50s I believe.
