£2.99 at special price over here mid-70s, then £3.50, £3.99... as the oil crisis took hold. Still a good deal.
Forgot to mention the Atlantic ‘The Atlantic Years,,,’ and the Impulse twofers too. All great !
Yeah - I kept all of them, the Milestones, Prestiges, Savoys, Blue Notes and Vogues. They are invaluable - and the sonics can be very good indeed. Surprised how decent the sound on the Milt Jackson is.
Some very nice Melba Liston and Ernie Wilkins arrangements and Hank Jones tinkles away in the background to great swinging effect. Lovely !
UK Vogue 2LP. Compiles several Med Flory and Herb Geller releases. This ‘West Coast Scene’ series was a good one !
The first side of 4 Jubilee LPs is in this set. According to Alun Morgan’s notes the intention was for another volume collating the second sides. Never happened, by the look of it.
That is true about Gary Bartz. Some years ago I saw him do a fusion-based gig with Eddie Henderson. With both artists I had a feeling that this stuff, where they majored in the 70s/80s, was not in line with their current norm. Both handled it with aplomb though.
I have a copy of the Hazel Scott 10” Debut LP. Always liked the cover - on the back there is some ‘sample copy’ scribbling by presumably Celia or Mingus?
I just remember that particular period as a load of hype, ramping up to loads of TV commercials featuring hip jazz dudes with saxes and credit cards, major record deals for Steve Williamson, Andy Sheppard etc and then the whole thing evaporating double fast..
No doubt they were swamped with demand and there is a shipping container full of them on its way to the UK as we speak (just in time for the March shenanigans ).
I definitely need a good Vertigo vinyl of ‘Solar Plexus’.
I can imagine that he would have been very fond of ‘Old Heartland’. It is obviously a very personal work, a tribute to Northumbria. It got a fine and very prominent showing at Ian’s memorial concert, which I’m sure you recall Roger.
