  1. Huge debt owed in terms of imparting jazz knowledge and some very insightful sleevenotes and articles. RIP.
  2. UK Fontana, stereo 47W63rd DG mono
  3. Doesn’t bug me too much - probably because I am so used to hearing stereo Atlantic and immune to it. Having said that, by far the best ‘Giant Steps’ I have heard is the mono UK first release on the London label.
  4. More from the box (mono securely ‘off’ ). Spent a fair part of the afternoon putting this set under the VPI - to good effect.
  5. Blue Note/Music Matters etc. know how to drain our wallets...
  6. Hope so ! A Morgan set covering the 60s period would be stunning - albeit no surprises. As would a Horace Silver covering the period up to the ‘United States of Mind’ LPs. I was going to say McLean but then I remembered they’ve already done it.
  7. LP1 - ‘Giant Steps’
  8. According to the Hofmann Forum the ‘Etcetera’ is a step up from the ‘Wally’ pressing so could be interesting.
  9. Funilly enough I remember being slightly disappointed at the time (by the arrangements more than anything) and preferred Coleman’s quartet gigs (which were outstanding) but I must have needed my head testing ! I think the band was caught on disk on Jazz House Records put out by Ronnie Scotts.
  10. That lineup was pretty well the one I saw at Ronnies - with the difference that it was Strozier on alto I think and possibly also Idris Muhammed on drums.
  11. Reminds me that almost 20 years ago I saw/heard Herb Geller play these charts with a West Coast band including a good number of the original lineup, most sadly no longer with us.
  12. Was wondering if they might have recorded George Coleman’s Octet with Danny Moore and Frank Strozier at this venue? If so, that would be a corker.
  13. Given that my ‘to listen to’ pile already covers a couple of decades, I have given up !
  14. Probably Sony bringing out the Dex ‘ Complete Columbia’ box stymied that one. Would have been a great set - and sadly I missed out on that Dex box but do have pretty well all of it on vinyl.
  15. Yes, it is purely about storage. Access time criticality and assured security may rule it out in certain applications but for music it is ideal.
  16. Get well soon - lots of unpleasant late Winter bugs going around at the moment.
  17. UK is saying early March. I think I’m in for this one, plus still have to pick up some of the previous batch. As mentioned, the sonics are great and the music well up to standard. Heck, the Timeless has Hutcherson, Land, Walton, Higgins, Fuller and Buster Williams. That is pretty well my ideal lineup.. That Hayes was from the same tour that Woody Shaw and Junior Cook had an on-stage bust up at Ronnie Scotts, from my memory of the Melody Maker gig report at the time.

    WTF !
  19. Horrible. I’ll stick with my £7 Casio..
  20. Sadly, my conclusion too.
