  1. not forgetting ‘Finland, Finland...’
  2. RIP, sorry to hear this. I got to see/hear him once at NY Town Hall in a lineup which also included Harry Edison and Buddy Tate. Such a smooth technique and great sound he got.
  3. Seeing the above, reminds me of.. Nice report, sounds like a blast !
  4. plus a Complete Muse Pat Martino?
  5. Never realised he was from the US. That ‘Super Dave Osborne’ show seemed to be on the airwaves constantly on Canadian CTV (I think) back in the ‘90s’ so I always assumed that, like the show, he was a Canuck.
  6. Kiyoshi Koyama’s greatest hour (along with the Clifford Brown) !
  7. Does inner sleeve count ?
  8. CD2 - The ‘Cosmos’ session with Kermit Moore strings.
  9. Thanks for posting these videos. I have this on DVD somewhere but couldn’t previously find it on Youtube. Interestingly, looks like the late Alan Downey is in the trumpets but don’t think he is credited on the album. Same for Henry Lowther. Dave Horler on valve trombone was also there on those 75th and 80th birthday concerts. Alfie Reece on tuba was on ‘Windmill Tilter’ !
  10. Another Sam Rivers set covering various labels (plus his own unreleased stuff) from the 1970s onwards would be good - starting with Impulse. Shame they were never let loose on the UK Columbia Lansdowne library. The recent vinyl Rendell/Carr set put out by Jazzman would have been a shoe-in (and no doubt more available ).
  11. Sad news, another blast from the past. Remember him doing his ‘stunt’ stuff on North American TV. RIP.
  12. I’ve got a Tempo LP of that one. Also came out in the US on Jazzland I think (‘The Hooter’). Malcolm Cecil of course well known for his electronics work with Stevie Wonder. Left the UK many moons ago.
  13. This late one from Kenny, also on Psi, is also recommended and the title sums it up nicely. Just spinning it..
  14. After watching a repeat of Burns ‘Vietnam’ series last night I have come to the conclusion that the bit of film must have related to the An Loc bombing raids, Easter 1972. Timing feels about right. Amazingly, there is a transcript of the CBS news broadcast that night to confirm it. It was a Wed night and I would have seen this on a Sat or Sun. Two/three days delay whilst they transferred the film footage across the Atlantic to the Beeb would be about right. End of geek interjection..
  15. Believe it or not, BBC TV actually did a short Kenny Wheeler documentary which included footage taken at the recording session (CTS, Wembley I think). It was rebroadcast around 2005. The Wheeler 75th and 80th Birthday Big Bands had a similarly eclectic mixture of artists and styles - those bands were full of his friends and colleagues. Duncan Lamont at one end of the spectrum, Evan Parker at the other. Very glad I caught both of those tours. The original Incus ‘Song For Someone’ LP release is quite rare I think. There was a subsequent issue by Incus on thinner vinyl which is more obiquitous. The CD was put out by Evan Parker along with several other choice Wheeler (new) issues at the time. Invaluable !
  16. Track 17 is a shocker ! In between the heavy breathing of the ‘main feature’, sounds like it could be Woody Shaw or Benny Bailey on flu-gel. Sal Nistico on tenor? Kenny Drew piano ? Obviously note a Blue Note session..
  17. Track 13 is Cedar Walton’s ‘Bolivia’. Not Cedar though - would this be by that Ben Markley Big Band album of his tunes? Track 14 is a version of Tina Brooks’ ‘True Blue’ by a more recent band. Idris Muhammed on drums and Kenny Garrett on alto immediately recognisable. The Good Doctor on B3?
  18. Please ignore my inputs. Looks like I’m commenting on the wrong BFT - having trouble accessing it. I hope this isn’t an omen for the year ahead.. Working now... Track 7 sounds like Eddie Lockjaw Davis. ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’. Is this one from that late period Steeplechase album?
  19. Track 1 is from one of Horace Silver’s later Blue Note albums I think. Track 11 sounds like Arthur Blythe from one of his Columbia albums with Bob Stewart on tuba. ‘Illusions?’ This one really grooves ! Really? I’ll quit now then whilst I’m behind..
