  1. Sort of synapse thing, I think (although it did remind me of 4-Seasons too).
  2. I view this set as a time capsule of the late 70s/early 80s US scene. These type of releases were formative to my early listening so there’s a certain sentimental value, having bought e.g. the Curtis Fuller when it first came out. I have a fair number of them on vinyl but wouldn’t want to be without this fine Mosaic box. Agree that the Brignola sessions are outstanding.
  3. Happy Birthday !
  4. Very nice. I caught the 2nd set on the internet this morning and thought his playing on tenor and flute was excellent. In fact, just as good as the last time I saw him, nearly 20 years ago.
  5. CD2 - ‘Afro-Bossa’
  6. Remember seeing her interviewed on TV about Dinah Washington. I believe she was a good friend of Dinah’s, in addition to accompanying her (she is on the Mosaic Roullette Dinah Washington set).
  7. An intriguing indication as to where Morgan’s music might have gone, had he lived. Big fan of this session here !
  8. Indeed - all of his BN album covers are great. The Dr. was interviewed on Gilles Peterson’s BBC6 show last week prior to a London club appearance. Came across as a great guy.
  9. Very good sound, indeed. Liberty, stereo

    Herb Geller

Back in 1999 he was featured extensively by LA Jazz Institute in a variety of settings. I remember seeing him featured on an ‘Art Pepper Plus 11’ recreation - and also ‘Birth of the Cool’.
  11. ‘Consciousness’ and ‘Live’ are both very good too. Plus a thumbs up for ‘One, Two, Free’.

    Hi Res CDs

With CD and streaming playback you have the D-To-A conversion process - which tales time and is subject to jitter. With vinyl the signal is continuous.

    Hi Res CDs

Some of the best sounding CDs I have are very early masterings, way before compression became an issue. Having said that, I prefer vinyl on the whole. That verdict is on the basis of my particular implementation - and there is no doubt that the transient response is superior. Both are excellent formats !
  14. I have a copy of that lingering somewhere. Must find it !!
  15. When I saw him at Ronnie’s some years ago I took my Prestige and Muse vinyl along and he signed the lot ! His signature itself is a work of art. Pride of place goes to the signed ‘El Hombre’. I remember him and his tour manager commenting favourably on seeing vinyl when I plonked the bundle on the table.
  16. Very sad news - I think he did a gig over here in London only about a month ago so very active until the end. RIP.
  17. Just dived in to ‘Funk in France’. Side E - ‘Upshot’, very much in GG of ‘Carryin’ On’ vintage. Clarence Palmer on drums pretty incendiary at this Antibes gig. No major qualms about the sound, although the organ is a bit far back in the mix.
  18. I would agree. Sides A and B are straight ahead, although Grant gets into an extended groove on ‘How Insensitive’ on Side B. The funk tune medleys on Sides C and D are off the scale in terms of in the pocket groove though, real highlights. The whole band is really tight on these medleys, must have been amazing to witness from the audience.
  19. The booklet notes are up to the usual high standards too. I like the way that ‘Oil Can Harry’s’ has photos of the band and audience at the actual gig plus newspaper cuttings of the reviews in the B.C. papers. Real good stuff !
  20. Same here. Just listened to ‘Oil Can Harry’s’ so far but it is brilliant. LP1 starts laid back, side 2 cranks up the funk and sides 3 and 4 completely burn !
  21. Yes, always worth a spin. The Cellar Door set came and went faster than most of them, I think. Same with ‘Complete On The Corner’.
