  1. Dexter Gordon ‘Our Man In Paris’ (Blue Note NY USA stereo). Beautiful sounding copy, in pristine nick.
  2. I think the last time I saw him was at the Westbrook Big Band Xmas gig at least 5 years back. I’d heard he had heart problems and was scheduled around then for an op. I don’t think he appeared wth the most recent Westbrook Big Band line up, the ‘Uncommon Orchestra’ - at least not to my knowledge. Very glad to have at least caught those earlier gigs. He was a long term resident of the county of Devon in his later years.
  3. Just heard the very sad news that saxophonist Lou Gare has passed away. Founder member of AMM, important pioneer on the experimental music scene and until quite recently featured with Mike Westbrook’s Big Band in a more straight ahead jazz context. I was always very impressed with his fine playing. RIP.
  4. Dannie Richmond had a strong claim, back in the day.
  5. Similar conditions here for much of yesterday - severe Atlantic storms. Clear skied though this morning, a welcome change. Hope it clears soon kinuta ! Those conditions sound as if they would even beat my Japanese umbrella - still in use and bought at the 7/11 in Tokyo in 2014 !
  6. Sony Miles Plugged Nickel CD Box - never tire of this one.
  7. Kenny Wheeler Big Band 75th Birthday concert at QEH, London. BBC broadcast. With Lee Konitz guesting. Great memories of a fine evening !
  8. A very good sounding set.
  9. These guys are quoting just over $2 for shipping this behemoth from Japan? In my dreams..
  10. Sad news, RIP. I liked his playing with ‘In Cahoots’.
  11. Just listening Harry Edison ‘Blues For Lovers’ on a Japanese Atlas LP - this one probably qualifies and is certainly worth a listen or three. Bob Cooper featured on tenor.
  12. Reminds me of Tottenham Court Road, London circa 1980. One got to be expert in abrupt crossings of the road..
  13. Maybe ask him why he plays ‘Butterfly’ so often.
  14. Plus it’s got the Miles Blindfold tests ! I’ve got a copy of Feather’s 70s Encyclopedia (with Ira Gitler). Picked it up in the bookshop of London University, where Feather originally graduated (odd coincidence..)
  15. Sam Most Eddie Large Sid Little
  16. Incredible how he fits this in with his intensive UK tour schedule. Very impressive !
  17. Sonny Rollins ‘The Sound Of Sonny’ (UK Riverside white label). Cracking sonics !
  18. Yep, I don’t recall anything Blakey-wise other than those low-profile Sonets plus an Atlantic reissue of the album with Monk prior to ‘Gypsy Folk Tales’, which came out on Pye (no doubt a deal with Mr Levy).
  19. Quick update - There is a JATP style fundraiser scheduled for the 29th in Swanage to raise funds for a potential festival next year under Nigel Price’s direction. Also a kickstarter campaign plus very early bird advance tickets. A bit of a hike on season ticket prices though. The lineup on the 29th looks very good - Simon Spillett, Tony Kofi, Dave Newton, Mr Price plus many others.
