  1. I think I caught that broadcast too. ‘Whistling Bob’ era.
  2. Didn’t someone on the board win a Miles or Coltrane Downbeat Award at that Guernsey auction? And was it really already 12 years ago !
  3. Very sad news, RIP.
  4. Glad to report that Duncan Lamont is still doing gigs. He also has this nice release inspired by music he recorded for a cult 1970s kids TV show. George Chisholm used to crop up on TV variety shows a lot too, back in the day.
  5. CD7. Desert island mateial here..
  6. Saw that McKusick on the list. Those Ike Quebec Blue Notes looked nice, alas a bit ‘rich’ for my taste.
  7. If none of the outlets there have it, it must be truly mythic !
  8. Philip Harper’s Quintet at Smalls. Nicholas Payton on bass !! - and Roy Hargrove sitting in.
  9. Package from Leicester, perchance?
  10. John ‘Cones Hot Line’ Major Eggwina Miss Whiplash
  11. I guess they were prepared for ‘export’ as one hour episodes and BBC4 ignored that and broadcast 2 per night. Shich they often do e.g. Borgen etc.
  12. I always think J Edgar Hoover..
  13. Miles Davis Plugged Nickel set. Disk 6 - Dec 23 1965 3rd set. Listening to this set always seems to conjour up images of Francis Bacon’s Popes ! (at least with me).
  14. 55 minutes each episode per the BBC broadcasts.
  15. Just started watching it. The Beeb is showing it in 2 episode blocks over here.
  16. Thanks for the BFT, some very interesting selections. I would never have guessed Maria Schneider Orch. as No. 8 !
  17. Kicking myself for not getting to a cash machine and picking up that CD ! I think this is the first time I have seen Gibbs lead his own orchestra, although I have seen him direct other aggregations. His conducting style (seated) is a lot like Gil Evans, very low key and focussed on the score. Michael Janisch was on acoustic bass last night - very impressive. I remember his ‘Only Chrome Waterfall Orchestra’ coming out just as I was getting into jazz. Time to dig it out.
  18. Stunning performance, most likely the gig of the year for me too. To my mind they hit the peak from the off, with that superb arrangement of ‘You Go To My Head’. Gil Evans would have been proud of that one. ‘Las Vegas Tango’ and ‘Django’ were stunning as well. In fact, it was all pretty great. The Wheeler tribute I forgot the name of too. An inspired lineup of some of the best UK players and good to see Henry Lowther in there, who was on those Deram albums back in the day. There was a CD on sale with of the band playing Gil Evans material. Not sure how recent that one is. Sadly, I was out of cash.
  19. Furry jacket, loon pants and skull cap? I would like to hear more of this concert. The sound isn’t the greatest on the CD but the performance grooves, for sure.
  20. How about more of that Avery Fisher Hall 1975 Newport performance? There was one track (‘Mtume’) on Bootleg set no. 4 but that was it. Is the rest of it un-listenable?
  21. CD3 Berlin 1973
  22. Sleepy Stein Rick Stein Jock Stein
