  1. Clifford Jarvis was one underrated drummer. Lived in London for many years and passed away over here I think. Have come across musicians who used to jam with him. He was pretty low key in his years here.
  2. Yep, all those 'Books' are great.
  3. I think you'll find that was dug for Georgie Porgie's Northern Powerhouse idea. Expect it to be filled in before the triumphalist Autumn Conference. Location for Jezza's victory ceremony?
  4. Booker Ervin 'The Blues Book' (Transatlantic)
  5. Another very early West Coast intro for me were those Wardell Gray tracks with Sonny Criss and Teddy Charles. Interesting to compare those with Prince Lasha/Sonny Simmons 'Firebirds'.
  6. That Toshiba 3LP box is nice. Time to dig out !
  7. What a great career - an absolute stalwart. Wishing him the very best for his retirement.
  8. Thanks all - I am overdue a trip to NYC and a return visit to Stockholm for sure !
  9. Best wishes for better health to Mr Cobb !
  10. Good reminder that I need to make a start on this project. I think I'll order 1000 of the spacesavingsleeves for starters, so that I can actually bring some CDs out of cupboards in hiding upstairs and make them more accessible. It would be nice to have all CDs visible and accessible in one room. I'll end up with a loft full of old CD cases at the end of it. Is that why they call themselves Jazzloft?
  11. Today's listening: Howard Lucraft 'Showcase For Modern Jazz' (Decca DG mono) Colin Bates Trio 'Brew' (UK Fontana, stereo) Don Rendell Quintet 'Space Walk' (UK Columbia, Lansdowne Series) John Cameron 'Off Centre' (Deram, mono) That 'Master of the Art' is pretty representative as to how Woody's live groups sounded circa 1982/1983 (along with 'Lotus Flower').
  12. Thanks Dan, bichos and Brownie !
  13. Lovely ! Many thanks, chaps !
  14. Same here. My old UK hardback has cover art by Ian Dury !
  15. Thanks Bill - your package arrived bang on schedule and currently really enjoying back to back Jimmy Heath on Riverside ! Thanks - good idea. Mosaic fest today !
  16. Thanks for that link. Here's the Top 10 for my birthday: 64 - African Waltz - Cannonball Adderley Orchestra (jazz made the charts!!!!!) Not only that - but John Dankworth Orchestra had a UK hit with their version of that gem !
  17. 'The Three Bells' by The Browns. Never heard of it/them ! In the UK it was Cliff's 'Living Doll'. More like it !
  18. Blue Coronet in Brooklyn? Very interesting indeed !
  19. Had a brief chat with him too (a big thing for me as he is one of my all time favourite artists) and he came across as polite and kindly too. First time I saw him was in a fairly small Western Canadian concert hall (very nice venue). He got a good round of appreciation as he came in and it was clear also by the reaction that he appreciated it, glad to say. His wife Dolly must have been a rock of strength.
  20. Picked up a Mosaic Commodore Vol 2 myself quite recently for pretty reasonable £. Now I just need a Vol 3 !
  21. 'The Big Band Sound of Thad Jones & Mel Lewis With Miss Ruth Brown' (UK Solid State)
  22. Joe Newman Quintet at Count Basie's (Mercury)
