  1. Case in point - I was playing a vinyl of this vintage of 'Time For Tyner' yesterday, Transamerica Corp. blue Label. Great LP and music but the pressing absolutely sucked ! Is that the one where one side is a Van Gelder cut and the other isn't? I agree that one it isn't the best. However, it seems to be an exception. In general, I've had good luck with these pressings when they have Van Gelder in the deadwax. Not so much luck when they don't. Just checked - that's correct ! The 'Van Gelder' is on side 1 only. What I can only describe as 'excess static/noise' permeates the LP, especially on side 2. I'm a fan of it ! Never warmed to 'Natural Illusions' though (once nearly bought an Applause LP pressing of it )
  2. All of these gizmos seem to have a half-life measured in months. The LPs will still be going strong 50 years hence.
  3. Dug Dinsdale Spiny Norman
  4. The Bobby Hutcherson 'Waiting' and 'The View From The Inside' are both well worth picking up.
  5. Chesty Morgan Captain Morgan Morgan The Pirate
  6. Just give it a bit of time - one of the sensors or motor will pack up, necessitating a £££ repair or alternatively a trip to the skip !

  8. Just given it a listen - no great revelations and I would think that the same show with the same general conclusions could have been made back in the mid-1970s. Paul Morley's thoughts on music are always worth a listen.
  9. And this from a broadcaster who gave us a TV documentary on Sun Ra not much over 5 years ago ! Not to mention 'Jazz Britannia'.

  18. I can relate to that. Old female friend of mine totally worshipped him and had most of his LPs and went to all the Northern UK gigs. She was quite impressed with my 'George Benson Cookbook' LP.

  20. Another recommendation for those boxes. Certainly an ear-opener for me and a very good overview of the earlier period of jazz for those of us who tend to go more for the later eras.
  21. Howard McGhee 'The Sharp Edge' (Dutch Fontana, stereo)
  22. Have a good one !
  23. There always seems to be what I can only describe as 'low signal to noise' with these US Atlantics, which can make them something of a disappointment. The Londons are a noticeable improvement, in that respect.
  24. Lots of mentions of that Devo picture disk LP in the comments on this article. I've got a copy of that one somewhere.. Sounds like an improvement to the overpriced tosh that they are churning out up in Malmsbury at the moment !
  25. Sad news and very sorry to hear this. RIP.
