  1. Damn ! Having said that, pretty well all the essential stuff is now out. Blue Note and Mr Cuscuna have done us proud over the last few years.
  2. I've got a 50s Dutch original Phillips pressing of the album and the cover is as per the Columbia with the same Mobley picture as in 'Far Away Lands'. Well, he lived in Rancho Bernado near San Diego I believe, not too far from the Mexical Border.
  3. I've got two East Wind Art Farmers on Inner City ('The Summer Knows' and 'To Duke With Love'). Brown labels both. They sound fine - but I'd prefer the East Wind versions.
  4. Hal Singer Gene Ammons Gator Tail
  5. All those BJP 'Rare Grooves' are good ! This morning - Rendell/Carr Quintet - 'Shades Of Blue' (UK Columbia Lansdowne series, mono)
  6. Gerald Lascelles Fred Trueman 'Sir' Geoffrey Boycott
  7. With velvet cushion and page-boy switch operative.
  8. Personally, I was hoping she might have Sun Ra's Horseshoe Tavern Toronto 10CD set on there. Or Allen's 4 'Develin Tune' boxes
  9. Cafe Montmartre? Bummer ! Carmen McRae/Clark-Boland Big Band 'November Girl' (Black Lion) - suprisingly poor quality recording for Lansdowns studio. Or possibly just a bad pressing.
  10. Joe Pass Pacific Jazz, CD1. Nice to dig this one out again !
  11. Just been watching the 'Magic Sun' B&W short on DVD. Looks as if it was from Sun Ra's 'Strange Strings' vintage around 1966 - art house inverse negative effects which must have seemed like totally from another planet back in the day. Musically very interesting, with prominent solo space to Marshall Allen and Walter Miller plus bags of reverb. Ronnie Boykins and Clifford Jarvis also in the lineup (looks like there's some inverse negative shots of Clifford drumming and some-one (Ra?) on that space-harp thingy, on the film).
  12. Walt Dickerson Sun Ra Talvin Singh
  13. More from my Freebie Dave Brubeck haul: 'Bossa Nova USA' (UK CBS stereo) - Great sound and production by Teo with Bill Smith - 'The Riddle' (Fontana, mono). Again, nice sound 'Newport 1958' (Fontana, mono). A few more crackles and pops on this one but still OK.
  14. Dennis Mackrell Slide Hampton Gladys Hampton
  15. I LOVE library records. This particular one quite a legit purchase. Thames TV's library must have had one of the very best jazz collections in the UK when it was up and running (especially of British Jazz) - the entire library must have come on the market back in the 1980s or early 90s when the TV franchise folded.
  16. Stuff Smith Verve Otis Spann/Lightning Hopkins Candid Commodore II and III LPs Millie Columbia Braxton Arista The latter shouldn't be too difficult, at least !
  17. Splendid. The first beer's on me.
  18. Must sort out that wave I'll be at the Branford and the Dave Holland. Also the Empirical Adderley film tribute and the Bobo (in the Assembly Rooms - very cultured !) Not sure about the Bojan. I'll need convincing on that one. I passed on the mock Battle of Quiberon Bay with radio controlled battleships + musical accompaniment in the Roman Baths but it sounds dead cool Should be a good weekend of music. Tell me where you are sitting. I'll wave at you! I booked some Bath concerts today: Saturday Portico Qt + Bojan Z Jerusalem Quartet (Haydn, Bartok and Debussy...hope I'm not required to wear a dinner jacket!) Sunday Nick Bartsche + Curios Julie Fowlis (Gaelic folk singer...hope I'm not required to wear a kilt). Monday Bobo Stenson Branford Marsalis (hope I'm not requiredto wear a beret).
  19. Happy Birthday, Chuck ! Good listening and hopefully lots of nice food and drink !
  20. Dave Brubeck 'Countdown - Time In Outer Space' (Columbia 6-eye mono). Beaten up copy free from a colleague at work. Looks as if Olympic skating practice has been held on it but sounds amazingly good. Also 4 more free Brubeck UK Columbias and Fontanas to get through.
  21. I have the British LP pressing of this on MPS/BASF. It's been a personal favourite since about 1976 - very good sound.
  22. Horace Silver 'The Tokyo Blues' (BN NY USA mono, DG side 1 )
  23. Yep, I've seen that one. The band is the one from the 'Ego' vintage and has Ted Dunbar and Warren Smith, I think. Very grainy, for sure - but Larry definitely in Arabian head-dress.
