  1. I had a chat with him a few years ago and he seemed much younger - certainly in spirit. A delightful guy - very grateful to have got to meet him.
  2. Deeply sad news - hope he is now in peace. I'm lost for words That recent filmed performance now takes on very great significance.
  3. Anyone notice Private Norma Winstone standing near the back? Apparently when this photo was originally taken the Vietnam War was still ongoing and an old granny with a bag walked up the platform past one of the musicians (Don Rendell?) and spat at his feet.
  4. The Dizzy (Universal version) is available for 80 Euro from the german store JPC (= $108, plus 8 Euro shipping cost and no customs duty) : http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/hnum/5129160/ I'm not sure if Zweitausendeins will offer any more Mosaic box sets. The only box sets they are selling now are cheap public domain compilations. Thanks Claude - that's a shame if zweitausendeins don't offer any further Mosaics. Maybe we've passed a Golden Age as far as they were concerned.
  5. Another London-based classic (Kings Cross?). Motley shower on demob leave.
  6. Yep, I've got that Japanese reissue of the Thad Jones Debut and it is very nice ! Currently spinning - Michael Garrick Sextet 'Home Stretch Blues' (UK Argo stereo). From 1972 with Norma Winstone.
  7. Tubby Hayes 'Mexican Green' (Japanese Fontana stereo) Grachan Moncur III 'Some Other Stuff' (BN NY USA mono) John Cameron 'Cover Lover' (UK Columbia stereo). With Ronnie Ross.
  8. Not sure, perhaps Chuck knows ? RCM manufacturers claim that it sticks to new LPs and its removal (from a new pristine LP) improves playback. No support yet for that claim from the feedback here, so far. I stick all new LPs under a VPI for a couple of cycles with RR Solutions cleansers. There;s a marked improvement - expanded soundstage.
  9. Another recommendation for the VPI. Big difference.
  10. Mike Westbrook 'Citadel/Room 315' (RCA Victor stereo). Great feature for John Surman !
  11. Very Happy Birthday Erik ! Maybe a good excuse to treat yourself to a Mosaic?
  12. 'Shelly Manne & His Men at the Blackhawk Vol 3' (Contemporary stereo black label DG)
  13. The band with Woody Shaw - on 'Ichi-Ban' (or was it 'Itchy- Ban'? )
  14. Thanks Berigan, I'd forgotten there was an old thread on this one. I'm tempted on the basis of the positive comments by yourself, ghost and pryan. Trying to filter out Weizen's "More old fuddy duddy stuff.....where's the Hutcherson Mosaic ????" postings.
  15. Hey Sidewinder.....care to translate for us Yanks across the pond! I take it a Dog's Bollocks is good and ten a penny is expensive??? As they have always said, we are two countries separated by a common language! Yep to the first (olde Anglo-Saxon) and nyet to the second (ie. dirt cheap)!
  16. That VEE of the Schifrin was always a hard one to get. Went OOP very quickly, I recall. The vinyl, of course, is ten a penny.
  17. That Lalo Schifrin 'Marquis de Sade' is a nice one. A bit on the short side (most of the tracks around the 2-3 minute mark) but one that I find most enjoyable. Almost a concept album, really. People seem to have very mixed opinions on this one - if you like jazz with a 'baroque' edge then you'll probably like it.
  18. Any thoughts on this set?
  19. With the £ just coming through the $2 and with this break effectively giving free shipping, I'm gonna be tempted with that Diz. No doubt zweitausendeins will then so their own 2007 'Universal Mosaic' sale (of which absolutely no sign as yet).
  20. Happy Birthday Your Highness ! Is this your 'real' or 'official' birthday?
  21. Just out on Trunk Records. Last, postumous release from the great man.
