  1. At the London gig last year with Lonnie Smith (or was it the year before) that I saw, LD did make his usual scathing statement about 'fusion/confusion'. Maybe he says that at every gig? He seemed to be enjoying himself on 'Alligator Bogaloo' though.
  2. I quite like the 'Visions' - although it does have the spaced out vibe and excessive reverb of the time and is far from Grant's greatest (and it is very easy listening/MOR in parts). Got it for about $10 on the Blue/Black Liberty - not sure I'd pay $40.
  3. Stanley Cowell 'Blues For The Vietcong' (UK Polydor stereo)
  4. Great thread ! Just recalling something that happened many years ago - around 1976/77. At that time I was a regular reader of Melody Maker and one week there was a review of a Ronnie Scotts gig by the Louis Hayes/Junior Cook Quintet featuring Woody Shaw. The gig was curtailed I think because of a major on-stage clash (or clashes) between Junior and Woody - can't recall the exact details. Wish I'd cut out the review.
  5. Walter Bishop Jr 'Coral Keys' (Black Jazz)
  6. Looks to be in incredible condition. Lots of these 500 pressings have been coming out of the woodwork of late. We must be up to 499 already.
  7. A good obituary in todays Daily Telegraph: Hill Obit
  8. George Russell 'The Outer View' (UK Fontana mono). Marte Roling sleeve.
  9. Wow ! Didn't know he was still actively playing. I hope they do some of those great cuts from 'High Blues Pressure' and 'Blue Spirits'. Would have given anything to be at this one.
  10. James Moody 'Don't Look Away Now' (Prestige blue label, mono). With Eddie Jefferson Oliver Nelson 'Afro-American Sketches' (Prestige Blue Label stereo)
  11. 'Like Someone In Love - Introducing Danny Moss' (UK Columbia stereo). Ballad album with strings, Les Condon on trumpet.
  12. Still seems like yesterday that he was running round the pitch like a bundle of energy and full of enthusiasm. Then a regular pundit on the TV with that trademark squeeky voice. Truly one of a kind - RIP.
  13. In his autobiography I recall a story of Amis walking out of a NYC (Birdland I think) gig in the late 50s with Miles and Coltrane and hating it. The Philip Larkin 'fuddy-duddy' stuff was more his thing !
  14. Thanks for the heads up. For once they come out slightly more expensive than Mosaic for the Diz set (with 10% April discount). A first !
  15. Thanks for the heads up. I have this set on CD but have earmarked the vinyl since it came out. The CD sound that Sony got is just great but I'm sure the LP version is stupendous. Any first opinions? Sadly, my fridge and dishwasher have packed up so the Mosaic $ is going to be hit. Can only hope the £ goes to $2.50 over the next few days to ease the pain !
  16. and with "HANDMADE PAINTING COVER IN VG+"
  17. That explains it. I was thinking for a moment that Mobley Mosaic vinyl had undergone rampant instantaneous de-flation. runsgood99 cleans up again !
  18. Closely followed by two tracks from Hank's 'No Room For Squares'. That piano intro to 'Carolyn' is one of the greatest piano intros ever, followed by a great, great Hill solo. Doesn't get better ! Do I really have to leave this and get in the car for work?
  19. Reissued vinyl has also been readily available for at least a few years. That 'Strange Strings' album is one of the greatest, I think. 'Strange Strange' indeed.
  20. Enjoying a bit of the WKCR tribute broadcast. Jimmy Woods 'Conflict' now playing (often overlooked in Andrew's discography). Too bad I can't access this broadcast at work.
  21. Andrew could definitely lay down the funk when he wanted to. Not sure which one I prefer - the one on the LP or the version with Jimmy Ponder. Both great ! Will dig out the LP a bit later tonight.
  22. The BBC reports Andrew Hill's death. 5 years ago he would never have got on their radar so it is in a way a heartening indication that his profile in the UK has - at long last - gone significantly up. BBC Link
  23. Jackie McLean 'One Step Beyond' (BN NY USA stereo). A young Tony Williams chomping at the bit from the first track. Next up - Jackie McLean/Ornette Coleman 'New and Old Gospel' (BN Liberty blue/white stereo)
