  1. Jackie McLean 'One Step Beyond' (BN NY USA stereo). A young Tony Williams chomping at the bit from the first track. Next up - Jackie McLean/Ornette Coleman 'New and Old Gospel' (BN Liberty blue/white stereo)
  2. Big John Patton 'Got A Good Thing Goin' (BN NY USA mono)
  3. Hope it's a good one !
  4. Andrew Hill 'Smokestack' (BN NY USA stereo) Andrew Hill 'Black Fire' (BN NY USA mono)
  5. Definite structural element (albeit minimalist) in this landmark recording.
  6. Just listening to the recent 4CD Proper compilation of Tubby Hayes called 'The Young Giant'. As well as some stellar Tempo material on their with Dizzy Reece, Ronnie Scott etc. there's rare airchecks too. Of note - a 1956 BBC 'afternoon light music' broadcast (presumably for the housewives' afternoon tea break ) of Hayes' Orchestra playing material such as 'The Yellow Rose of Texas'. Priceless ! There's also a great little booklet with fine notes by Tubb-ologist Simon Spillett and rare photos of the various bands. I'm not usually a fan of Proper but I've made exception for this one.
  7. Coutts the Banker Mike Reid Dirty Den
  8. Actually, that looks like Brussels. Can you identify it Brownie? MG Could also have been Bath. Or Bradford !
  9. I think I saw that one at a display at Chino Erik, about 10 years ago and got to have a crawl round inside it. A fabulous example. They had about 6-7 B-25s taking off together. Quite a sight. Two astronauts were also doing displays that day. One I think was either Borman or Lovell - in a King Cobra. The other 'naut was in a Mustang I think. I try to make a major display every year - hope to get up to the main UK International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in the Sumer. My employer does subsidised admission.
  10. Yep, that's about the going rate for the CD version these days. Vinyl's even more.
  11. Just bought 3 of them over here today. £5 each - 'Dance To The Music', 'Stand' and 'Riot'. These are the only Sly Stone CDs I've got - although I have an original LP copy of 'Fresh' somewhere in the racks I think.
  12. Love that set ! The later sessions with Buster Williams are particularly good.
  13. Indeed. Just re-read those MC notes to the first 'Select' and dedication to the cause is very evident. Also too for those 'pre-Mosaic' brown cover 2LPs - of which 'One For One' was one of the standouts. Stealth operation that one.
  14. Just been playing the first Hill Select. It is a monster - especially the string quartet material and the 'Chained' session. What have you been missing? About time I ordered the solo box.
  15. I wasn't previously aware that AH had been piano player with Dinah Washington. There was a very good documentary on the Beeb TV last night about Dinah which said that she went through piano players at a pretty fast rate (as well as the 8-9 husbands) - with some interesting reminiscences also from Patti Bown and Chuck Stewart. Too bad they didn't also interview Andrew. I wonder how long he stayed in the Dinah Washington group?
  16. Andrew Hill 'Compulsion' (BN NY USA mono). Played at 6am in the morning at volume it is the aural equivalent of a bracing cold power-shower. Magnificent ! Will be spinning the vinyls of 'Judgement', 'Smokestack', 'Our Thing', 'Point of Departure', 'Grass Roots', 'Lift Every Voice' etc. over the weekend.
  17. The first one. I'd forgotten that there was a second one now available of the solo material - which I really must get around to ordering.
  18. This is the way I've gone with my own tooth work. It ended up with some synthetic bone graft to make up for material removed in the extraction. Takes about 3-4 months to complete if you have just a small amount of graft or around 8-9 months if you need a more extensive graft with membrane. The technology is definitely there now with the titanium implants.
  19. That is a good point. His Blue Note catalogue is now in very good shape thanks to the recent issue of 'Compulsion'. Critical plaudits were rightly given for 'Time Lines', 'Passing Ships' and the superb 3CD Mosaic Select. And those of us in Europe are fortunate indeed that we were able to see him on tour at various times during these last 10 years.
  20. Me too. The moment I see this set at $35 the money will fly out of pocket with gusto ! In the interim, I'll live with the vinyl.
