  1. I've got a live LP by the Al Grey/Jimmy Forrest Quintet that I'm sure was sold by them and signed by both at one of their gigs. I've seen other similar copies.
  2. I vaguely remember I used to listen to something called Jazz FM, broadcasted in the evening when I lived in London 16 years ago. now call Smooth FM.... guess what it plays....... It started off so promisingly back in the early 90s - half-way decent progressive jazz coverage and an excellent magazine. Only trouble was you had to live in the London area to receive it. Now in the days of the internet it's 24/7 R&B and loads of Kenny G/Boney James etc etc in between the mindless adverts. Miraculously though a strange survival from times past - 1 hour of Campbell Burnap mainstream jazz on Saturday evening (very good I might add) ). There's rumours of a new jazz station franchise imminent - maybe they will get it right this time.
  3. They were still selling Saturn LPs on stage from a box at a gig of theirs I saw back in 1989. Details are hazy but it might have been John Gilmore or Marshall Allen doing the selling, for $ cash only. Like an idiot, I didn't buy any, having just acquired a new fangled CD player at the time and thinking vinyl was on the way out !
  4. I'll bet that Record Research Lab stuff is great - if their record cleaning products are anything to go by !
  5. porcy - just checked and the stuff I use is Audio-Technica AT607 'Stylus Cleaning Formula'. Got mine over here at a branch of 'Audio Excellence' (part of the Audio-T group). I reckon it should be easy to get over in Italy. If not, give me a shout.
  6. Nothing much I can add but my sincere condolences.
  7. Stan Tracey Big Brass 'Fest' (UK Columbia Lansdowne)
  8. I use stylus cleaning fluid - applied carefully with a small brush (supplied with the bottle) in a direction parallel with the tonearm. Works fine ! In combination with record cleaning via VPI 16.5/RR Solutions the results are good. Can't quite recall the name of the supplier of the stylus cleaner but I think it's Japanese. £5 a bottle over here. Will check out the name if you are interested.
  9. chippy/chippie - slang term for a fish and chip shop and also for a carpenter.
  10. An unbelievable year for jazz losses. Very sad news - RIP.
  11. Yep, I would agree. THat one also crossed my mind. Add Mike Westbrook's 'Celebration', 'Metropolis' and 'Citadel/Room 315' also to that category.
  12. I guess John Coltrane 'Africa Brass' would fall into this territory. How about also 'Sahib Shihab and the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra' (Octav)
  13. You need to buy one of Mosaic's shrinkwrap gizmos before you can do that.
  14. Elvin's set has been featuring strongly on my player in recent days. Never tire of this stuff, there's so much heart to this music. Really diggin' that 1972 'Mr Jones' album recorded with brother Thad (that one must have done a quick disappearing trick to the cutout racks when it originally came out).
  15. Francy Boland 'Flirt and Dream' (Saba stereo)
  16. Check out the Schema/Rearward site for lots of CBBB nuggets on CD and LP !
  17. Charles Tolliver 'Impact' on Strata-East Second the recommendation for Art Blakey's Big Band and the Slide Hamptons.
  18. I need to wake up. I was thinking that this threas was about a new Miles Davis marine sanctuary !
  19. go on, we'll let you take that on vinyl Providing you let us all play with your turntable Ta ! Mono NY USA pressing with 'Van Gelder' and 'Ear' of course..
  20. Big John P. Disk 3 One or two of the vinyl sets later today. Probably Woody Shaw and Serge Chaloff
  21. The Crickets The Yardbirds Matching Mole
  22. A nigh-on impossible task but here we go: 1. Hank Mobley 'Soul Station' 2. Hank Mobley 'No Room For Squares' 3. Bobby Hutcherson 'Happenings' (honourable mention 'Oblique') 4. Horace Silver 'The Tokyo Blues' (honourable mention 'The Jody Grind) 5. Grachan Moncur III 'Evolution' (near run with 'Some Other Stuff') 6. Jackie McLean 'Destination Out' (near run with just about all of his other BN albums) 7. Larry Young 'Unity' (neck and neck really with 'Into Something') 8. Lee Morgan 'Search For The New Land' (just pipped 'The Sidewinder') 9. Andrew Hill 'Compulsion' (highly under-rated) 10. Joe Henderson 'Inner Urge' (difficult to decide between any of his albums, and the ones with Dorham, really) 11. Sam Rivers 'Fuchsia Swing Song' (woops....)
