  1. Another master has left. RIP. Thanks for the music.
  2. The photo is from the Louis Armstrong House in Queens New York. Dizzy, unknown, Louis Armstrong, Arvell Shaw and Bid Sid Catlett. Back stage of a NYC club in the 1940’s. Any guesses who the unknown person could be?
  3. Sometimes too much reverb on Bennett, Mathis and Andy Williams. I always wondered why Reverbed was looked at as something that needed to be added. Sometimes it’s so intense it feels as if I’m in a tunnel listening to music or an empty shopping mall with music playing over the sound system. Is there an industry reason why reverb was used so much?
  4. He played the Vanguard two weeks ago. .

  10. May it be funky day and filed with sammiches. I heard Lou will come to NYC, JALC, and might perform with an organ quartet.
  11. Today I heard in a waiting room Horace Silver's "Peace" done Muzak. It was really done well. I tried to use Shazam, which I have on my iPhone, to find out who it was, but it didn't recognize who.
  12. He did spend a lot of time in his bedroom. Once at a Barry Harris show at the Vanguard, Barry told a story about Monk. Both were living in the baroness' house in Hackensack. Barry said he was practicing a tune for about 3 hours. Barry said he paused before playing some more. When he started up again, Monk opened his bedroom door and yelled "Shut the fuck up. You know it enough" When I was in the 11th grade, I was in the school band. I had a friend in the band who's mom was Monk's niece. He told our music teacher Monk was his Mom's uncle. Our teacher asked if he could call Monk and see if he would come to the school. My friend's mom called, but he wouldn't come out of his bedroom to talk on the phone. I assuming the woman on the the other end of the call was Nica, but don't know for sure. This was in 1980.
