  5. Yes - eventually ! It may take some time to get oop titles back to stores again since issuing new CDs is considered a priority at this time ! Chuck, you could always p.m. a list of the titles you (and freinds you know of) miss most; this might help decided where to begin with. ← A few titles to consider: Lil Armstrong: 1936 - 40 Mary Lou Williams: 1944 Jimmie Noone (all five titles) Mills Blue Rhythm Band (all five) Andy Kirk (all except the first, '38, '43-49, which seem to be in print) etc ps - Pls keep the "Chonogical" name/title. It's already part of 'jazzlore'.
  6. I haven't received my catalogue yet , but then I got the set ages ago.
  7. From Sidney Bechet society:
  8. Valaida Snow ~ According to online bios, she could play cello, bass, violin, banjo, mandolin, harp, accordion, clarinet, saxophone and trumpet. Her records only have her playing (excellent) trumpet...and she could sing too. John Kirby - bass, tuba and trombone.

Up Any more recommendations? How about "Open on All Sides in the Middle" or "Twylight" or "Printmakers"? Thanks! :)
  10. A friend e-mailed Fantasy several times for a catalogue and he did eventually receive the '05 CD-ROM and the '02 print copy, but it took them almost a year to mail the items.
  11. There's a big fan of Mosaic sets over at the other joint. Why don't you send him a request for a detailed cost-benefits analysis. It's FOC!
  12. Yes. This one is the first on my Mosaics to buy list. Your first line above makes it sound as if you buy a Mosaic every week. True or just me reading too much into it?
  13. Looking forward to the Freddie Redd - been searching for this for some time now. Also the Don Cherry. And I'll have to order BNs from the U.S now since local stores supply copy protected discs, have upped prices by 25% and take their sweet time (like 2-3 years) to bring in new releases!!
  14. The b******s!!! Too many <$5 deals (mostly JIPs) lead me to order a couple of dozen too many and then some. Any news on this release? ← Frog website says "Django Vol.3 - is on its way - watch this space!"
  16. I'd cry like a little girl if I had to wait 6-10 weeks for a Mosaic order! I guess we're a little spoiled here, used to 1-2 days with DHL. ← DHL does a pretty good job for international customers too.Placed my order for the Donald Byrd and Jones sets on Thursday. They were delivered on Monday. But surface...... ← Packages sent by surface mail normally take 12-15 weeks to reach my area. DHL is the only way to ship, with max waiting time of just 3 days.

  18. My unbiased opinion is that this is an absolute must have set. ...for Duke feenatiks that is. :rsmile: Was pleasantly surprised by the mostly excellent sound quality which are as good as if not better than the live material from the same period by the big name labels. There's periodic background noise ala clinking of glasses and chatter, but those are minor irritations. If I recall properly (last listened several years back), Duke gets a bit more space for soloing, when he does play, compared to many of his other band recordings. As you've seen from the lineup, this is a stellar cast of musicians. Don't know if you'll think lesser of the sessions cause Hodges ain't there. I don't.
  19. Up a bit Jimmie was born on this date (6 June).

  21. For vocalists, I would nominate Betty Carter.
  22. Joe Pass discs 4 & 5. Two of the best discs in the set IMO (For Django and a live session).
  23. Thanks Ubu for starting this thread. Excellent big band and one of my favourites; great arrangements, good soloists and very polished sound overall. The Masters of Jazz series is indeed the best way to get their material up to the early 40s. Classics also has one disc of their music made after the leader's passing and with many of the top players no longer in the band - some fairly good material there but for completists only. Anyone knows if there is a DVD of some of the band's performances? Can't seem to find any in stores
  24. Got most of them.
