I have the Monk, Blakey, Dearie, Brubeck, Gillespie and Getz/Gilberto--the cd releases. . . I like them all. I personally believe these are legit. Devialet would be foolish to put themselves at such a risk, and I don't think they're fools. And Sony distributes them, again a legal risk I don't think they would take.

I think this LP may be where Donald Fagen picked up the "Ricki" riff. "The Art Farmer Quintet plays the Great Jazz Hits" Sony cd

I really like the trio format, with drums or guitar. And I think in large part I was initially drawn deeply into these combos because I can play some piano, some bass, some guitar and a lot of drums. So I can play along, either with an instrument or in my own cranium, and I can understand somewhat deeper what is going on than in other combos. It took me some time to warm up to Bill Evans who I first encountered via his work with Miles. I left his own work alone for quite some time but near the end of the 'eighties I found myself drawn to his solo and trio work strongly. That attraction has not diminished.

I got into jazz in part because my parents had jazz records in their collection, and in part because a Peace Corps volunteer my Dad directed in Swaziland as the first Director there gave me three Atlantic mono jazz LPs from a box Atlantic Records sent all volunteers of LPs. He didn't like them. They were Another Dimension, Blues Shout and Sister Salvation. I became obsessed with jazz when I returned to the US in rural Ohio and found Filles De Kilimanjaro and In a Silent Way at the library. American rock and pop didn't do much for me after five years in Africa. Honestly, I don't believe jazz and alcohol have to have much to do with each other. That said I was a normal young man who drank a little in my youth, but I saw both personally and professionally after that drink destroy the life of a close friend, and endanger the livelihood of coworkers, and I gave it up. Haven't missed it. I don't eat tofu sandwiches. I live out in the country, across the road from a state wildlife preserve. I don't get around much any more other than to visit my father once or twice a week in hospice.

Sorry, I don't drink. Seriously I don't, and I don't hang out among drinks and drinkers.

Sure, we weren't not friends. We have different musical interests and posting styles. So be it.

It was complaining that I stated you do plenty of. I did not state all film music was drivel. But I do feel that in an alternate universe that Mingus became a film music composer what he wrote would not compare to what we have had from him in this universe outside the film industry.
-
Lord knows TTK does plenty of that.

I didn't say it can't be art, but it's nothing that really interests me, including the music of Chinatown. There's lots of types of art and pieces within types of art that don't interest me.
-
He might have lived longer, making a lot of drivel. Then again he probably would throw temper tantrums and become blacklisted and drink himself to death.
-
I myself am glad we have the Mingus we have here not in TV production.

It was a really exciting release when it came out. I can even remember when I picked it up and where, and I've loved this music ever since.

Lucy has a "hair appointment" so I am getting a bonus listening session in and continuing with Miles Davis, "Water Babies" Columbia cd, from the Complete Columbia Albums box set Great, different music on both sides of this original album, I really wanted to hear side 1 this time, the second great Quintet. This cover always brings me back to childhood in Philadelphia. . . we had one neighbor Dad who brought out a big monkey wrench a few times each summer and opened up a water hydrant and kids flocked to frolic in the outpouring of water for about an hour before city workers came out to wrench it closed again. Ah, simple fun urban childhood times.

Weber Iago "Os Filhos do Vento (Children of the Wind)" Adventure Music cd As with every Adventure cd I've bought excellent sound. Interesting music. . . world music I'd say, with a strong jazz seasoning. . . or vice versa?
