  1. Yes, I have very much enjoyed a few rock and soul box sets too. . . I was thinking jazz though. Anyway, Concord might fool us yet, but no one's holding their breath.
  2. Me too. Fresh Sound should have paired this with Hot Line. The other material on this new cd has been on cd.
  3. Many many happy returns!
  4. Okay, I guess I gave Concord more credit than due. Still, who has put out great box sets since the death of Fantasy? There haven't been many outside of Mosaic and Hip-O Select . . . . These days are not those days.
  5. Was there a "babe thread" at Blue Note BB? I don't remember one til here.
  6. I think it's from the Jazz Workshop. Everyone swears there were no tapes of the Monterey performance. http://www.kyushu-ns.ac.jp/~allan/Documents/JC_S_60-64.HTML
  7. I joined the Pete Campbell Book of the Month club.
  8. I think the movie was a shade too long and I think they could have re-written the Thor-Iron Man-Cap fight or left it out altogether, just seemed unnecessary squabbling, and there was plenty of bickering later. I'm fine with Whedon, think he has a sort of television writing genius, I just don't like the vampire-demon-monster genre that he has transformed for more than half his output. Still, he did a great job, both writing AND directing, Avengers. And Shawn, you have plenty of your own talent, and I hope it can flower soon. I wish the Fantastic Four franchise hadn't phased out and away. This plot would have worked fabulously as a Fantastic Four movie, with the Baxter Building and all Reed Richards' gadgets replacing the Helicarrier. . . .And I would have loved to see how Josh handled that team.
  9. I think you have this right. Concord has the potential to create great sets (the Ray Charles ABC Singles box being a good recent example) but. . . why should they in jazz in this day and age of cd devaluation.
  10. There's one on ebay.
  11. Jazz in Texas. Not as big as it should be in this big big state.
  12. My two cents, posted on the other film thread (I refuse to allow them to just talk about stuffy films ) Went to see The Avengers. Quite a good film. Having rewatched Firefly, Serenity and both seasons of Dollhouse the last few months, then going to see Cabin in the Woods, I was a bit Whedon'd out, and I think it shaved a bit of my possible enjoyment off. I'm not as over the top enthusiastic as many about this film, but it was very well done, and a helluva lot of fun. I saw it in 2D. I'm getting tired of 3D and its cost is just not commensurate with the final product. My biggest beef, though it wasn't inaccurate as far as the books, was how much time was spent squabbling among themselves. And that Loki was ultimately a pretty tame and inept world-conquering demi-god supervillain. And thank goodness there was ScarJo as the Black Widow to watch, she was sorely needed among all that testosterone.
  13. Yes, but like me I know that Flurin would prefer to have one remastered by Tarantino from the original tapes. The Fresh Sound isn't all that it could be if the tapes were there.
  14. I used to have the Jitterbug Waltz two lp set, that was my first Dolphy outside of Mingus recordings. Now I have the two cd box set that Chuck has. Just revisited it this week. Very vivid sound.
  15. What Garland Blue Notes were on it?
  16. Amen. Those are great albums (and a great compilation).
  17. Many many happy returns!
  18. I would wager it's likely the input tubes, but I'd clean all sockets. I've never used such a spray so I'm not sure how to advise you as far as that goes.
  19. Cool. I don't do Netflix, but good to know it's available.
  20. When I've heard similar sounds from tube equipment (vintage tube equipment; I've never heard that particular sound from my Decware amps) it's been a tube. Does it seem evenly form both speakers or just from one speaker? If the latter, moving a tube to the other channel can show if it's just the tube. If you have only one input tube for both stereo channels replacing that tube and seeing if the sound persists. It's possible it's noise from other power supply components if it's not the tubes. . . . What type of amp are you using? Is it integrated? Do you have a separate preamp?
  21. Hoffman members able to access the Classified section will notice that there's a member selling both box sets for 400 dollars total. Pretty good deal for someone with very few of these.
  22. Yes, that was a good show, watched it on broadcast. Are you watching it on Netflix? Has it come out on disc?
  23. I saw Mays play against the Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium when I was young, one of the few baseball games I ever went to. Happy Birthday Willie! (I have a whole family of Williams, but no one is called Willie!)
  24. Reminded me of Shawn's cat.
  25. Many many more happy returns!
