  1. I haven't used them for anything, but I'm sure this isn't the only example. Probably Dead shows, Cream, etc. I think the record company would say "Hey, we'll take the money either way, through the download or from the cd." Why not? And I just looked and it appears as if the cd is not really in print at the moment in the states. And Amazon is selling a download. It's an interesting time for music fans.
  2. Again, believe what you want, I am not going to argue with you, but I'm not going to share your conclusions here. Use whatever is good enough for you, I applaud your decision to do so. I've been on audio boards and music boards for a decade and I've heard all this before and I have come to my own conclusions through listening and some fairly scientific comparisons. It is what it is as far as I'm concerned.
  3. Jim, according to this article put out when downloads were first released, it seems that the Vault has attempted to be legal: http://www.billboard.com/news/wolfgang-s-vault-opening-entire-concert-1004016989.story#/news/wolfgang-s-vault-opening-entire-concert-1004016989.story
  4. Well Leeway, a few years ago the MJQ release would have left me underwhelmed. For years Kay's drumming had been a stumbling block to my appreciation of their work, and I also didn't see deeply enough beyond the "chamber jazz" tag. Now I'm very happy to be enjoying their work. Glad I haven't gone back to vinyl as the availability of clean vintage jazz vinyl here is really bad, and the price for new is very off-putting. The Getz material though is very good, and well put together in its digital counterpart (one tune placed erroneously excepted). So far, I think McMaster has done a good job with the transfers and mastering here. "Porgy and Bess" sounds clearly better than its other cd incarnation for example.
  5. I agree whole-heartedly that there is a lot of hoodoo hogwash and lots of misrepresentation in audio talk and sales. I also disagree that cables make no difference. Sorry, I have come to that conclusion with care and trust what I perceive. AND I'm not going to argue about it. Believe what you wish to, and I'll believe what I wish to.
  6. I needed to add a cd to get free shipping from amazon, so I ordered the 2008 release. We'll see.
  7. I really don't know. . . I think that's quite possible. Confusing! If there WAS one, like So What I want to know!
  8. Mine too. I don't see much evidence that it has except. . . this amazon page shows an image of a Legacy back cover. . . . http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Goes-College-Dave-Brubeck/dp/B002HI70B0/ref=sr_1_8?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1306626882&sr=1-8
  9. Target is selling this for 9.99. Well worth that.
  10. I'd say Yes, as Stan Tonkel, an engineer on MANY Columbia sessions, mostly studio, is the credited engineer. So the Vault's is possibly different.
  11. Bev, In all honesty, I think that the DAC inside your Model 6 is of very high quality, and care is taken with signal routing, power delivery and clocking, and . . . well I don't think the Cambridge Audio is really going to be bring an improvement. You may be better served, if you're really looking for an improvement, by taking the upgrade path it seems Cyrus is offering and upgrading your 6 to an 8 if that's possible.
  12. Cool. I'll look a bit at that model. Sure, that's what the digital output is for, otherwise they wouldn't have added the output.
  13. 332 here! Surprised me, not sure I've ever gotten a set on a Saturday before. These are high numbers. Might be selling well.
  14. I bet the Vault version doesn't have some of the weird channel swapping mixing going on in the cd and lp. Might be a better listen.
  15. Bev, what model Cyrus do you have? It might have a better internal DAC than the Cambridge Audio. . . that's worth considering and perhaps doing a bit of reading research about.
  16. 1. This is pretty well-regarded. I'd wager yes. 2. Yes. 3. Yes, you'd use an optical connection (I'd recommend using glass rather than plastic optical cable) to go from the cd player (transport) into the DAC Magic, and then from the DAC Magic (via the RCA outputs on the farthest left) into the amp. 4. Balanced outputs. . well, some components use balanced connections instead of RCA. Professional components often, high end components sometimes, especially if cabling needs to be long. Just there in case that's how you connect.
  17. I picked up a copy of the Petty box for me, and one for Shawn, last weekend. Great deal at that price. Interesting set. Love that all five cds are on the Blu-Ray disc in 24/96. Wish that we see more Blu-Rays like this.
  18. I think that it has to be legit. Probably something in the contract for performances that Bill has rights as well?
  19. I'm finding this book fascinating.
  20. When she could my late wife would lie in bed for hours listening to the birds which sang in our backyard, which we kept intentionally overgrown and wild for that purpose. I miss the overgrown nature which is now gone, a lot; it reminded me of her in peaceful moments.
  21. I believe so. You don't have to spend megabucks, but well-constructed cables from good materials in a good design can make a significant difference. I wish it weren't so. I could have saved money. I've used some good cables from Decware, TARA Labs, Better Cables, PS Audio, Audio Quest and even Monster Cable. Those that come with most components aren't usually anything special. I've gotten most of my cables (all but the Decware) discounted. You shouldn't have to spend a lot.
  22. I use the same method to make coffee myself, a #2 cone. Fantastic flavor, great caffeine kick. The way to go, wastes nothing. Doesn't smell up a joint either. Oh boy. . . makes me want to have a cup, but I just drank a few glasses of hibiscus mint iced tea at lunch. .. I'm full.
  23. I can imagine. I'm soon going out there again, after making a really bad choice for a job at the end of last year. Not looking forward to the process.
