  1. Well, the material in this one sounds fine to very good to me. Maybe remastered, I don't know. There's also four or five hours of material never released before.
  2. I'm talking about this one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Horowitz_%E2%80%93_The_Complete_Original_Jacket_Collection Much more material, probably as much as four times more on 70 discs. And I paid less than twice what yours costs.
  3. Watching Paul Simon on SNL, performing "So Beautiful, So What." It ain't necessarily so Paul! If this is a hit, Miles' estate will probably sue.
  4. Still, a lot of the material I like most about the Original Jacket Collection isn't in that box.
  5. Ah come on man! You lose in the "my box is bigger than yours" category!
  6. FWIW, these are the first 6 jazz albums I owned (and could listen to repeatedly): "Kind of Blue" & "Nefertiti", and "Mode for Joe" (Henderson) & "Power to the People", plus Sun Ra's two latter-day dates on A&M ("Blue Delight" & "Purple Night"). Then I went crazy on Miles, mid-60's Blue Notes (with Joe and all of the sidemen from Mile's 2nd quintet), and LOTS more Sun Ra. At the time, Brubeck seemed really square to me. And the only alto players I liked were Jackie McLean, Eric Dolphy, and of course Ornette; then later Steve Coleman and Greg Osby. So a guy with a tone and approach like Paul Desmond's, seemed REALLY square to me. So the few Brubeck things I heard back in college were funneled through that frame of reference. Everyone has holes in their listening experience; it's just that mine tend to be some more obvious things that aren't holes for most other people. I didn't mean it as a value judgment my friend, I just didn't quite know where to start. There are some distinct "phases" in Brubeck's career, and I'm not sure where to start. I settled on tossing out Columbia material because the sound is always accessible and exceptional, and the albums work well as little islands to study and enjoy. I've had some success with Columbia albums as starting points for Monk and Duke and Mingus when people have asked for similar reasons. But just as in the case of Monk, Duke and Mingus, Brubeck's work is consistently interesting and of high quality and an open ear to any should prove fruitful.
  7. I think that's what I paid for this fascinating box set. Recommended!
  8. How do you settle that? To me it's like "the moon landing was faked." The people who believe are not going to be convinced. I myself don't see how all the material from both sessions would be at a speed 20 percent different. The official releases never sounded "wrong" to me. Going to have to get the new set. My friend Dave Laczko, the biggest RJ nut I know, says the sound is really improved, and he's one who rarely notices or cares about sonic things.
  9. Mark, it's hard to fathom recommendations for someone who hasn't had any interest in Brubeck for so long. I'll toss out "Jazz Impressions of New York" and if you ever stumble across a reasonably priced copy of the Japanese import (only way it's on cd so far) grab "Anything Goes."
  10. When I saw him last fall he had no piano, he had Bobby Broom.
  11. Looks as if it may be a BSX bass to me, or something like it (the headstock is different): http://www.bsxbass.com/
  12. I agree, some I prefer to others. My objection was to the adjective "crummy." They're not ever "crummy" needledrops in my experience. Some are fantastic, most are at least good to great.
  13. Thanks for providing that information. I was relatively certain that they all were Davies transfers, but they are housed in a room of my house currently occupied by another and I hadn't intruded to check. The sound is excellent on the Nostalgia Arts cds, and they are well notated. Of course there's no guarantee that they have not been re-transferred for this new box set, though I would be surprised if that did happen. Unfortunately, the Nostalgic Arts cds are hard to come by these days, so this new box set is a boon for those who do not possess them.
  14. Well, the Nostalgia Art cds are NOT crummy needledrops. Yes, Mosaic would do a slightly better job, but the Nostalgic Arts are not crappy jobs at all. Can't speak as to whether this box has different transfers or not, but there's nothign to complain about the previous issues from the Storyville label. Sound is excellent for this vintage material.
  15. Many many happy returns Rodney!
  16. This seems a collection of all the excellent Nostalgic Arts cds. I'm sticking with my copies of those.
  17. This seems to collect all the excellent Nostalgia and Arts cds. Those were reissues done right.
  18. No, no. By "all over this", I meant in terms of advice and recommendations. Well, I knew what you meant, and I'm not all over this as far as advice etc. goes. I'm not recommending this for TraneMonk considering how long it took him to consider the Young, Armstrong, etc. I'm not really sure this is stuff he'll get into. We all have our comfort zones.
  19. I'm not all over this. I like them. I'm not sure you would TraneMonk, I'm not sure it runs along your usual taste path. I could be wrong. Listen to some online samples. There's probably enough out there to draw an opinion on. I have all this material save the DVD, and I'm not sure I need a DVD. . . I'm more an aural than visual music listener.
  20. NOT the same performances as on the Blue Note cd.
  21. The Dynaco system that was my Dad's when I was growing up had a sort of stereo to mono fade on the preamplifier, it had a five position switch that went from very stereo to very mono. Just the sort of thing a kid could drive himself insane experimenting with.
  22. I think only the Davis has not been released before in the Jazz in Paris series.
  23. Thinking about how fascinating the musical mind of Randy Weston is.
  24. I still need to explore Free Jazz more, I haven't played it nearly enough to mine its rich veins. It's quite an accomplishment, and I know I'll find much to enjoy about it in the future. Bitches Brew was something I heard much earlier in my listening world and that hit me immediately. And still offers me much in the way of listening joy and intellectual prodding.
