  1. Just downloaded . . . and it sounds pretty darned good! Someone should post this on the AAJ eMusic thread too (I can't because I got myself banned for not being interested in the website, just the forum, Xricci finds that insulting).
  2. Okay a little research shows that the new "Dreams Come True" download from Chico is a duet with Andrew Hill!
  3. Really? I got an email from them, but no mention of Hill. . . .
  4. Some interesting stuff. What a great bargain. . .looooonnnnnnnnnngggggg tracks.
  5. Allen, is this the really cool "Mingus and Friends" Japanese issue with the Cosby intro and "conducted" piece? Both of these releases have great great music.
  6. According to a "dusted" review by Derek Taylor (probably my favorite reviewer) there were other "tape discoveries" by Sue that should be seeing the light of day. This is a great release. . . I'm listening to it again right now. . . love the sound and the playing.
  7. Still haven't received my copy. . . .
  8. It's not free jazz. You have to pay for it. In this case, directly to the artist.
  9. I've only read this one four times. The second time I had broken up with a woman with whom I had shared my life for a few years, and that was when that book most connected with me. But overall I'd disagree, I think it's a strong novel, and I really like what I see as gnostic elements in the novel, and the way in which seeking pleasure or escaping pain can bring ruin and litereally opens the door to evil.
  10. Thanks for the heads up!
  11. Sir, thou hast performed a nice public service!

    Stuff Reissues

Well I like the live lps best. In Tokyo, In New York. And an unofficial one I have courtesy of a fellow Stuff fan here on the board. I like the studio lps as party favorites of the past, I have a lot of sentimentality tied up in them, can't really remove that from my opinion of them probably. (Hey but what do I know, I'm silly enough to get myself banned from AAJ by Xricci the insecure). I have had and may still have a few of those Dupree albums, and I've seen Dupre play live here in Texas. . . He's very KOOL but I'm also an Eric Gale fan, and I like them both together. (And sue me, but I like Richard Tee too!) The closest I came to live Stuff was being dragged to a Paul Simon concert in 1980 with a girlfriend. Close. . . no cigar.

Ah dinner. . . cool. Enjoy!
  14. The Prima sides from the Prima/Manone Mosaic. (I have the Prima sides as an iTunes playlist and going).

    Miles & Mobley

I think in fact that Mobley and Miles were more similar than dissimilar in playing style, and Miles found that a dissimilar style next to him on the bandstand or in the studio worked better. Or it could be something extramusical. Often I think Miles dissed musicianship for reasons outside the musician's musicianship. I mean didn't he say something like "Duke Jordan couldn't play shit." I don't think that was ever true, no matter whether talking about his tenure with Bird or beyond.
  16. I love jazz. Some people think I'm eccentric. I think I'm sometimes downright weird. Don't feel like going into details. . . .Provide your own.
  17. Hope you have a fantastic day! They want to know where the party is. . . .

    Stuff Reissues

You know, call me a little crazy (wouldn't be the first time) but I sort of equate Stuff to thirties and forties Basie-ite small group stuff. . . I react emotionally to them in a similar fashion, and I think that their groove and feel is sort of a rock/soul similar one to that Basie feel and groove. Okay. .. little crazy.
  19. And meanwhile, the remastered "Greatest Hits" is due ou August 28.
  20. BIG CONGRATULATIONS!
  21. This is an exciting listen. Kudoes to Mark Wilder who I think did a fascinatingly good job on the sound.

    Stuff Reissues

That's interesting. . . I don't find them stiff on records, but I do find them a whole different thing (intentionally is my gutfeeling) from JBs, Meters, MGs. . . . And vive la difference, I like that difference!
  23. It is what it is. . .I like Clint's comment about ferocious and pastoral. . . . It's such a subjective thing. It's always been just waiting there for me to hear and experience. I wouldn't say I enjoy it. I do enjoy experiencing it . . . .The way my life and situation is, I almost always experience it alone. And being alone, I'm vulnerable to it and I'm usually in a very open mood and state when I do place this on. I have no idea what it is "really" and I've never "really" heard it (as in live!) which would be one benchmark for analysis. I often seem to hear a lot of pain in the music. . . cathartically released. That's just my impression, I don't claim it's really there! In general I don't try to analyze it, I just . . . experience it.

Cool, didn't know that about Gordon! What a player!

For me it's the guitars, the bass and Richard Tee more than anything. And my heart doesn't race, it's about the groove and the fun of creating the sound. . . .! By the way, wasn't using that final "stuff" as a joke. . . . Just using it as slang for material. (I think the group name is a possibly badly joke on the fact that "jazz" can mean "stuff.")
