  1. About five years ago I picked up an Enja cd that was part of a series of recordings that Duke Ellington had produced in 1963 in Paris for the Reprise label, but had never been released until the late nineties. It was Sathima Bea Benjamin backed by her husband Dollar Brand and his trio, and Duke and Billy Strayhorn, and the wonderful violinist Sven Asmussen also appeared backing Sathima. I bought the cd because of Duke, and I loved the cd because of Samitha. I had never heard her voice before, and although I knew Dollar Brand's later work, I had not expected what I heard and it really took me many listens to grasp the true beauty of this work and for it to work its magic on me. . . . Since that time I've found some other works by Sathima and have to say that these albums are ones that I can reach for and be soothed. Art Blakey has spoken of jazz "washing away the dust of everyday life" (I'm paraphrasing) and if so. . . the recordings I have that Sathima has made contain some powerful (ecofriendly!) detergents! I've been stuck lately on "Musical Echoes", which is a very well produced, very well arranged, and very well performed cd that happens to also sound fabulous. It's also available on eMusic as a download, and as such is one of the real audio bargains. Two other recordings are also available on eMusic: http://www.emusic.com/artist/Sathima.../10555365.html I know there is ONE big fan and actual associate of Sathima's on the AAJ board. . . . Any orgers wish to chime in as fans?
  2. Don't you just love it? Nat King Cole's "Greatest Country Songs" is now available as a "new jazz release!"
  3. I can get it used for $6 at Half Price. Oh yeah get it. You can say to yourself, "Wow! This is worth at least . . .8 bucks with tax!"
  4. The new cd of Night of the Purple Moon is fun. . . . Playing it was a good way to start the day.
  5. I only know about the Clifford Brown. . .unless the Chet is one that was released last year. . . . Actually, I have the material on the Brown on tape from a collector, but haven't seen either of the sessions on cd before, though they may have appeared on Philology (not comprehensively familiar with that catalog).
  6. They obviously must target, and reach, a whole different market with these "Timeless" compilations. I've got the Shearing.
  7. Well, I'm not really fond of reviewing or reviews any longer, I find that more and more I subjectively appreciate music and objectively don't know what to say. I'm not Jim Sangrey. That man should be working for the entire international jazz field as an apostle, we should all support his salary every week with a few dollars/postcreds/drachmae whatever. But I'll say this: the sound is fabulous, if a needle drop. The session is fun and oddly focused on melody and simplicity. The additional ensemble "bonus track" is a great addition. The short solo piano/celeste material is fun to hear but not essential. I've learned my lesson: preorder from Atavistic and you get the releases faster than anyone.
  8. Got my copy from Atavistic last night. . . Thou shalt not be disappointed.
  9. It's a very expanded version of the domest complete Savoy/Discovery sides. Extensive details here: http://vintners.net/~mikel/art_pepper/complete_surf_ride/
  10. Aloc! Follow all medical advice and get fully recovered! All my best.
  11. Really? I'm with Clem on this one. . . a few of these albums are very good but. . . . This is low down on my list. I'll order the Ruby Braff Single.
  12. Japan released an excellent two cd set of the Pepper material. . . probably near impossible to find now.
  13. Well not everyone has the Wes box, so at least this cd has more from the session than the earlier cd. I like the sound on this very much, better than the DCC
  14. Previous thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...c=33648&hl=
  15. The other two releases previously scheduled are from Shirley Horn and Grover Washington, Jr. (both from 1994) but these do not yet show up for preorder.
  16. CDuniverse has the upcoming (end of July) releases on the new Monterey Jazz Fest label for Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong up for preorder. Details: Monterey Jazz Festival Records is a stand-alone label in partnership with the Monterey Jazz Festival and Concord Music Group. The profits realized by the festival will be re-invested into its ongoing internationally recognized jazz education programs. The MJFR imprint's first five unreleased recordings, to be released on July 31, capture the crème de la crème of the jazz heritage: Louis Armstrong (caught playing the very first night of the festival in 1958); Miles Davis (introducing to the West Coast his classic '60s quintet, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, featuring saxophonist George Coleman in 1963); Thelonious Monk (his quartet augmented by bassist Steve Swallow and an expanded five-piece festival workshop in 1964) http://www.montereyjazzfestival.org/media/042307.html
  17. The Wes also has additional material and EXCELLENT sound.
  18. Congratulations! You've joined a club!
  19. Supersonic Sounds (sometimes titled Supersonic Jazz) Cosmos Mayan Temples St. Louis Blues (on IAI Records) Solo Piano Vol. 1 (on IAI Records) Unity Nubians of Plutonia Angels and Demons at Play Bad and Beautiful Astro Black Space Is The Place The Other Side of the Sun Strange Celestial Road Lanquidity I would certainly include "We Travel the Spaceways" (coupled with Band and Beautiful on an Evidence cd), one of my very favorites. Glad you have the Transition/Delmarks. . . those are among my very favorites.
  20. I too was convinced 16 was a fake. And yes, ugh, that face unlucky #13. . . .
  21. Okay. I remain unconvinced.
  22. I'm somewhat familiar with Les Baxter's exotica records. . .wouldn't say I think they really influenced Ra though. . . . One thing I really like about Ra is how he really nailed the southern african horn sound on some recordings. . .long before that sound was very well known in this country.
  23. 15 correct. Some were tough!
  24. That is a seriously GREAASSYY sleeve. Wo is it? MG That's old Head Rag Tatum, Art's older brother. Good one! Of course it's Pops! Saw that instantly!
  25. Tarantino. I don't have the SACD, so got this, and it has material not on my earlier cd.
