  1. You are correct - the D/A converter is obviously a huge part of the puzzle. Is there a way to bypass the internal D/A converter in an iPod? I honestly don't know. For that matter, I don't even know the specs on the iPod's internal converter - I would expect that they aren't very good. FWIW, I have a friend who has 24bit converters on his computers and he says that he gets excellent sound quality playing lossless files from harddisc (he does production and mastering). There is a way to bypss the DACs in the iPod as Monitor Audio makes an "iDeck" which does just this, and I have seen an expensive "mod"to the iPod that also accomplishes this.
  2. Face it, we're weirdos.
  3. Darn! I didn't get to see that! But I've been in that room in the seventies.
  4. They possibly pressed even fewer lps than of the other sets. . . .
  5. Both those are good. . . . and the Berigan is also excellent (and not going to be around for much longer). (But none of them are really what I would call "swing" except a big chunk of the HRS.)

I bought a clearance guitar from Target for a friend as well, a Washburn "Lyons" strat copy that had a little practice amp in the box as well for about that same price. Was not a bad guitar for a beginner for that price!

Me too! I think the RVG sound great and I listened to it twice yesterday actually. Dex. . .. He was one of a kind!
  8. I have a taped copy of that lp that I have on cdr. . . .I'll definitely buy this cd. But. . . . The other two releases also look intriguing and I can't find info on them.
  9. Wow! Can't find any news on these. . . they look great!

Glad LAL mentioned a couple of Hodes. I would not like to be without the Hodes and Ra sides.
  11. My sister lives in Richmond and sent me some information I didn't find anywhere else: "The VT incident is still big in our news. Several pages of the paper the last two days with photos and info on each of the victims. Two were from our area. One had called home after the shooting in her dorm to say she was safe and was talked into going to her next class by the police and then was killed. What a roller coaster for her family, thinking she was safe and then not hearing from her. A friend of mine has a friend with a son on the VT rescue squad (he is only a sophomore) and that will be difficult to get over, too. He said the cell phones were going off in all the backpacks when they went in and they couldn't answer them." I can imagine who anguishing it would be to hear all those cellphones. . . . And that poor family that thought their daughter was safe and then. . . .
  12. Cary, Yes, Smokestack is my favorite of the Hill Blue Notes (oddly Point of Departure is the one I don't quite "get" and hardly ever play. It's so. . .well. . . I can't describe Smokestack correctly either but it's "grounded" in a way that I find really appealing. And the piano work is just so different and beguiling.
  13. HELL YEAH IT"S CHRIS WOODS ON FLUTE GODDAMN WHY DIDN"T HE BRING HIS SAX!
  14. R, I definitely see your point about the self-indulgence in the sense that I think neither movie needed Tarantino as even a minor actor, and I wish he'd stayed off screen. But. . . I think the lengths were fine and I was never bored and I did like the way that the movies played out. I MIGHT have been bored with some of the "girl talk" aspects of the second movie (though I'm glad he took the time to let that part unfold) if it weren't for the fact that in the first half I was puzzling at what Tarantino thought was "like Austin" in the dialog and characterization---that really fell flat and I was involved in puzzling it out.
  15. Wow. I saw the previews and thought. . . "Okay, I've seen more than enough."
  16. Okay. . . I'm laughing!
  17. You should paste in the url right there where it asks you, if I think the window you get is what I think it is. . . . In the "Add Reply" window there's that image of a picture, select that, a window pops up with a place to past the url, paste it, and when the post is launched you should have an image. Or. . . in the body of the post type This is the way to manually do it with code.
  18. Personally I doubt that he has "redone the entire catalogue" by any means. I think he's done these in batches and they release them in batches. Long life to him, and I hope this continues. I would prefer all these Connoisseurs to be released as RVGs for example. I really enjoy these remasterings. (It's just a personal preferrence!)
  19. Okay. . . I don't remember anything along those lines. I think at that time when they used "soon" they had no clear plan of what was to come. . . . I would wager that the shows without video will come out on Dagger. . . .
  20. Yes, but wasn't that also totally different management of the material? Was it the family that pulled it out of print? It's likely that some of these will come out soon. . . Atlanta probably as a DVD.
  21. Many more many more many more!
  22. Will do! Actually, don't forget there are TWO Selects!
  23. I think that Jim has identified it correctly, it's the Royal Albert Hall concert (which is finally going to be coming out officially, according to what I've heard) material on that tape. NOT his last concert by a long shot.
