What's your "Claim to fame"
jazzbo replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Okay, here are some. . . . I shook hands with Hubert Humphrey. I shook hands with Haile Selassie. I talked briefly with both William Burroughs and Alan Ginsberg at a sherry hour at the University of Chicago (one of the weirdest five minutes of my college experience). I almost danced with Angela Strehli at the Flying Circus. -
That trio record was recorded the afternoon I was born!

Klook was one of the greatest minds and hearts to turn his attention and four limbs to a trap set. Period.

Okay, I had some money left over from my tax return and I decided to buy something I had been wanting to buy for some time: a Monitor "I-Deck" (the first version). I found this for 150 bucks and I have to say: if you are looking for an office or bedroom iPod system, this is da shitte. Sounds really good at low volumes (a must for me) and will get LOUD! 18 digital watts of power, efficient speakers. Heavy power supply, sound is clear and deep and full. Remote to use. You can also plug in another audio sorce via 1/4" phone jack. You can also connect to iTunes via firewire or USB, works like a charm for updating the iPod while it's docked. So glad I got this before they disappeared.

Not me. I've got it all in great sound except. . . I just want them to reissue Clique.
-
I love Klook! I dislike Proper. I'm passing, I have all but Clique, and I have that on vinyl.
-
I've always liked it. And I agree about Charlie.

I've had two Japanese versions that I really enjoy, the one just before the DSD remastered one, and the DSD remastered one. Kept the DSD remastered one. . . wow. . . sound is great, it's longer than the US, love the lp facimile packaging, etc.

Excellent! Always happy to see Condon/Chicagoan appreciation blooming!

It is a very cool chant. Listening to this for the first time in probably twenty years. I'm enjoyin' the listen.

Traffic Corner - and a green light for About Time

Man, you're easily satisfied! Me, I've had to have more than that. -
The blowout sale itself had a heading that said those items were being deleted from the catalog. . . . Not surprising, no, that we're looking at this now. I have been grabbing all the titles I think I will want. I probably will grab more Specialty and blues titles over the next year.

With the Savoy/Denon versions you got complete lps reissued. . .which was the point for them. . . . And which I came to enjoy as well. I don't like that they left off tracks of the Arista two lp sets they reissued, but that's my one complaint. (And I've found the tracks I needed elsewhere).

Listen to what da man say.

I can't remember exactly, but I think RVG worked out a weekly routine by which Prestige, Savoy and Blue Note used different days to record at his studio. If someone has the patience it shouldn't be too difficult to work out a RVG discography for, say, the mid-to-late 50s and see what his weeks were like. A hard job but someone had to do it, I guess F You're right, I read that too, I think it was in the Mosaic catalog brochure interview with RVG from many years ago. I do know that August 4, 1955 was a Wednesday (and RVG recorded Hank Jones "Trio" for Savoy that afternoon/evening). That important date and bit of info should help you figure them all out!

I bought a copy this week as a gift. . . It was #1841 or so. . . . Not that that is absolutely an indicator. But. . . I doubt they sold much more than 2,000.

My thoughts exactly! Well, I really like the "facimile" 16 bit and 20 bit series from Savoy/Denon. Love the fact that these were just like the lps and loved the glossy covers and big back cover and the sound was glorious! Some of my great exciting jazz collecting moments were getting this series out of the bins! Some wodnerful music!
-
Absolutely. This session deserves to be better known and appreciated.

I think quite a few of the fifties Savoy jazz LPs were done at RVG's. Ozzie Cadena was the guy responsible, I think. He got RVG to do a number of gospel albums I understand. Perhaps Malaco would do an RVG series of the gospel material MG Man, RVG did some beautiful jazz recordings for Savoy in the fifties. And the sound is a little different than BN or Prestige, CTI etc. on some of these dates. (He's recorded as saying that he tailored the sound according to producer needs. I totally love the way the sound is on the Savoy/Denon cds of the Hardin/Coltrane, Duke Jordan, Byrd, Hank Jones, and Fuller sessions (and others). Beautiful!

I'm such a fan of the RVG series(es) I'd buy some!

THANKS for that information and link.

I haven't compared the JSP to the Mosaic, but a friend of mine has, and he says. . . JSP ripped off the Mosaic and they sound the same to him.
-
I wouldn't be able to do it, but you may be able to. . . replace capacitors, etc. . . .There are those who work on Fishers, but the word on the audio forum streets are that they take a LOOOOOOONG time to get around to the job.
-
I don't have the Select though I might order it in due course (I have the material in various forms). . . but I totally agree about Cosmos, this is my favorite session of all those in the box.

Time for me to plug some of my favorite people: Decware High Fidelity Engineering. They started out doing speaker repair, the first to offer these services over the internet, and it was a successful venture, and they still do that: http://www.decware.com/newsite/mainmenu.htm Choose "Speaker Repair" from the menu in the left frame. He offers do it yourself kits.
